at the moment i,m looking at a boat package with either the 2 stroke merc or yamaha, and i would like to know what poeple think of either motors. both motors are to be 90 hp models
power heads are the same. Talking to Mercury this morning re prop for a 90 mercury. And would you believe only one dealer had any on the shelf. Had original size but not the new one. Rang Mercury back and gave the dealer a compliment
I live in Townsville, and nearly all commercial operators in the line fishing industry use Yamaha. You only have to go down to the local wharf to see that Yamaha is the only motor most of them use. Yamaha make heaps of other products, and all of them are up there with the best in their class. Mercury may only make outboards, but I would choose a Japanese engineered product over a American one anyday.
I am biased towards Yamaha, but that's only because everyone I fish with in North Queensland owns one.
Well if Mercs are so good how come none of the boys that make a living from fishing use them. A few hundred $ cheaper does not even come in to it when you have to depend on mechanical reliability to make a living
Only had a new 60hp mariner (merc) and a new 115 merc in the last 14 yrs and never a problem. Touch wood. never had a yammie but dont hear any bad reports.
Steve
I went Merc, mainly due to my confidence in the Yamy dealers support (none). Could have went either way otherwise. Tohatsu wasn't out of the game either.
Hi all, recently traded my old yamaha 90 (89) for a new mec 115, obviously there is a huge difference in power, but the toss was ( yam or merc ) reliabilility, was warned that the merc would be harder to start, but the merc would go harder. Watching other boats, the yams DO seem to start up better, my old 1 never failed, 1 touch of the key, where the merc seems to want to crank over a few times first, not good if you are already having problems, eg, ran a tank dry , or shitty fuel, however , no problems with the merc at all yet, goes like a demon, Muzz.
I purchased my new Yammy brand new in 2000 from my local dealer in T,ville. Prior I had the only mobile outboard mechanic come to my home to inspect my old 50 Merc that use to cause more troubles then a child in a house with ADD. I asked for his non bias opinion I guess because he doesn’t work full time at one particular dealer. He told me that he would buy a yammy every time and if you didn’t want to spend the little extra, try a Tohatsu second, but a long second he added. This information influenced my decision a lot. Secondly as already stated, many fishing charter guides rely each day on their Yammy. Many recreational user’s have one. I have never seen a boat with a Yammy on the back get a tow back to the ramp. Mines coming up to its 5th year, and not one fault has been experienced. I only service it once every 24 months as my mate who works at my local dealer in the service dept, said it’s not worth it and we do bugger all to them. I know a lot of people will be in conflict to this statement, but its only what I was told by the mechanic himself. I’d never have a Merc again, Yammy for life!!!!!
