johnson outboard problem?

i have a 90 model 60 hp jonno!
have just came back from holidays and went to start the boat as it has not been started for about a month! and seems the motor is running really rough and is blowing heaps of smoke! it has seperate oil and fuel! im thinking that maybe the oil inlet to the motor might be stuck somehow?
took the plugs out and they are badly oiled up! like i said heaps of smoke! is it time to start to pre mix my fuel now? what are your thoughts?

p.s i added new fresh fuel to it before starting!

Pretty common for the VRO (variable ratio oiler) to stuff up. Least it is to much oil than not enough. Pretty comon to block off the oil in line to VRO and run 50:1 premix, that way you always no how much oil is in the fuel.
Before you do that, give the motor a good run at about 3000 RPM for a while. What happns when the boat hasnt run for some time is the petrol evaporates in the carbs. but the oil dosnt,causing the motor to run rich for a while.... Hope it helps

thanks for that davo! i ran it at about 3000 rpm for a while but it just stopped as the plugs i would say were becomming oiled up! so you think i would be right to just disconnect the oil line into the motor? and block the line on the motor off with something?

the oil sensor is in the bottom of the oil resovor, provided there is sufficiant oil in it the alarm wont sound. But is easy to loop and disconect

Thats all very good Davo but what about the oil alarm for the VRO unit

Its an easy job too but it can be a terrible sound if you forget it [smiley=builder.gif]

Found this on the net might help

The way to test the VRO to see if it is working is to add oil to your gas, then see if the oil level drops with everything still hooked up. If so, then stop mixing, change spark plugs after last mixed gas is spent, and go.

I checked with o.m.c. on this matter and the easiest was to block off the oil is to disconnect the oil line at the fitting on the outside of the engine cowling (where the oil line goes to the fiting). use a 2in. piece of hose, push it over the exposed fittinf and plug it with a stainless bolt of suitable diameter. clamp it with a hose clamp. you will also need to disconnect the electrical plug from the v.r.o. and push it aside or tie strap it away so the cover goes on ok. if you don`t unplug this the alarm will sound continuously

I have a similar problem with my 115hp V4 Johno. In fact, it leaks a small amount of oil onto the ground when on the hardstand. According to the service people it is quite common with the VOR. The only recommendation was to run the motor at least every month to burn off oil leaking into the cylinders. Having done this the motor starts more easily and runs much cleaner. I now have a problem with the trim ram leaking around the piston shaft. Any advice before I dismantle it? I have a manual so it should not be too difficult.

thing is no matter how long i run the motor the problem is still there!!!!

I would strongly recommend that get the VRO removed its a time bomb when the oil isn't getting in to the motor and blows it ups
When I bought my Boat from the Boat yard even before it left it
I got VRO dissconnected made into a premix motor 50mm oil : 1litre pertol had Boat now 2yrs been great
