working with silicon - sticky fingers

I've been doing maintenance around the house, and been working with Silicon - how do you get rid of the stuff ?

Any ideas on what the correct solvent is for silicon to wash your hands off afterwards?

to stop the silicon sticking to your fingers whilst working the silicon. Stick them (the fingers that is ) in your mouth and get them all moist.
Don't get any moisture under your work though or you'll be starting again.
Any mineral based solvent should get the stuff off your pinkies afterwards.

Get yourself a pump action spray bottle from Woolies, fill it with a strong dish-washing liquid/water mix. Lay down your silicone, they spray it with the bottle. Run your finger over the silicone joint to smooth it out, then wipe any excess silicone off your fingers onto a rag. Your fingers will be clean.
The best stuff to remove the silicone from your hands if you tried to "dry" smooth your joint is either a product called Dahl, or Redback make a silicone clean up too.

It's best not to get the silicon on your hands in the first place. I hate the stuff yet as a tiler I have to use it all the time. I find the best way to tool the silicon is to use a pop stick sprayed with a detergent and water solution. As the other poster says fill a spray bottle with it and after applying the silicon spray it with the detergent, then spray the pop stick and use it to tool the silicon you can dip your finger in the detergent to smooth out the final application if you need to.

Pity I didn't ask first, you should see the mess I'm now cleaning up with a razor blade on the glass, so I don't have to re-do the job.

But for next time I'll use the info.

    Thanks for the replies

You can get a holder for stanley/box cutter blades that has a long handle, about 300mm. Place the blade in that and you will clean the glass in only a few seconds, not 20 mins 1/2 hr

    Fishy,
use the 'soapy water'. If you can't get enough "feel" with the paddle pop stick a couple of bucks at the supermarket will buy you a box of latex gloves. Depending how big/messy the job is use a whole glove or just cut the fingers off and slip on (your finger) like a condom

    Cheers
