Finally decided on a name for my boat. Do I need to register the name, or can I just get some stickers made up and bung them on?
Cheers.....

Has anyone ever changed a name on their boat? They say it's bad luck.
Yeah, it's supposed to be bad luck to change the name of a boat.
However, legend says that if you do need to change the name then you must cast the boat adrift after removing the old name and then recover it and put on the new name. That apparently removes the bad luck curse.
So just remove the old name and take the boat down to the beach and push it off. Then swim after it, jump in, and drive it back to the beach. Then put on the new name.
Of course it will still be bad luck if the wind is behind you and you can't catch up with the boat
I guess you then get to name a new boat
Chris.

Snapper's idea of naming a boat works too
That's what we did. Tip a bit of beer on the boat said a few words drank the rest of the beer and then went and pumped some yabbies.
If you are still not sure if you need to register the name, no. Only for Australian registration, and you are planning on taking the boat OS, which I assume you are not.
The problem comes with too many similar boat names and call signs.
If it was Aus registered, same names need to be Odysea I, Odysea II, Odysea III etc. But nothing like that at state level.
If there are similar named boats around on VHF everything needs to spelt phonetically. cheers
and there is me in the process of renaming my boat.
Finally got the registration sorted out, the new registration plate is being made and now I hear this bad luck omen thingy.....
It took a while to explain to the local arabic coast guard officer that NONICKERS is an english word with no hidden meaning to it
(My wifes nickname as a kid, given to her by her dutch mother -apparently means no money in the old dutch language?)
I already have a thing about bananas on the boat and whistling into the wind
So, another excuse to crack a few beers onboard......
Wessel
finga,
Just read the renaming procedure, and if I don't get locked up in a padded cell it'll be a miracle. ROFLMAO
Fortunatley the boat was purchased un-named(no stickers anyway), and I always under the impression that this was bad luck too.
I'm hopeing that naming it will improve my catch rate
Wessel,
good luck renaming your boat. If ya don't get a white jacket first
Yeah matey, that's why we did the beer thingo. Just adds that Aussie touchOriginally Posted by Bar Steed
