Haines Hunter 580SL
Just hoping someone could provide me with the approximate weight of a Haines 580SL (around 1990 model) with a Yamaha 130 2 stroke and trailer included. I am looking at getting a bit more mobile from the current situation which is dry storage - the towing vehicle is a 2005 Ford XR6 ute (capacity is apparently 2300kg). I have only just started checking out the towing regulations in QLD so any other info would also be appreciated, especially in regards to the differences between QLD and NSW laws - new port of call will likely be Brunswick Heads - perhaps then i will be able to chance my name from fishingfailure to something which sounds a bit more 'productive'.

Re: Haines Hunter 580SL
Jeff Websters Top 100 Second Hand Trailer Boats Mag (2nd edition) has hull weight listed as 800kg. You can do the rest of the figures.
400-500kg for trailer + motor + fuel/batteries + gear etc
It also suggests 140hp minimum as the hull "....loves to be driven hard ...... works best at speed...."
If your XR ute is a manual you may find the towing capacity is less than 2300kg.
The 580SL package you mention should be 1600-2000kg. Personally the 580SL would be the biggest package that i would feel confortable with behind your ute. (i have a Holden VZ ute)
If you have a heavy steel tray or tool boxes etc you may exceed the total GCM for the car even by towing (say) 1500kg. There is a lot of figures to factor in if you get really tricky !!!!
In NSW the law is generally the cars max towing capacity as published by the manufacturer or if this cannot be determined (eg a older car) then the cars weight x 1.5 (but you still cannot exceed the GCM)
If you go over 2ton you need "breakaway" brakes that apply automatically if the trailer is seperated from the car.
**** please check this info with the appropiate authorities !!! ****
From what you say, i feel you wont have any problems.

Thanks for that fishingrod,
Sounds like its a goer, though i would hate to void my insurance if something went pear shaped so i guess i better do a tad more research before shooting off down the M1 (Also have to decide whether to give up the valet boat launching, i will miss it greatly!).

Re: Haines Hunter 580SL
Its a bit of a circus with numbers and making sure you are 101% legal
Good specs at:
http://www.ford.com.au/global/pdf/ra...nute_specs.pdf
Im no expert, but the way i understand it:
Your kerb mass = 1835
Payload = 200 kg (2 big blokes in the cabin)
Total so far = 2035
The max GCM = 3720
So 3720 less 2035 = 1685 kg left for your boat
hmm it sounds a bit low to me?
Maybe someone else here can verify my calculations.
There is a whole bunch of fine print too that you need to add and subtract 20 and 60 kg here and there depending on the options you have fitted.
grr grrr
its all too hard

Re: Haines Hunter 580SL
I tow a Haines V19C Behind a 91 EB XR8 no probs..
I'm sure yor boat wont weigh more than 1800Kg on trailer so with a 2.3 tonn capacity you should be fine.
Don't take my word for it though, find out your max towing weight in your state and if nessacary take the boat and trailer over a weigh bridge fully laden with fuel and gear, only then will you be 100% either way.

Re: Haines Hunter 580SL
Thanks Fishingrod and Boz,
I have to say from what i see on the highways there must be a lot of people 'barely legal' (sorry about that). I'll look into getting the rig weighed as 'fishingfailure enterprises' would certainly end up in liquidation if it ended up in the hands of the insurers.
Fishingrod - i forgot to mention in the last post regarding the suggested minimum horsepower of 140hp from Jeff Webster's publication - the 130 Yamaha is a great match for the boat, i usually travel quite light anyways but with the standard load of two guys, esky and fishing gear the boat sits on 27 knots at 3800revs nicely - fuel consumption is quite reasonable also (i must admit the majority of my experience has been limited to only this boat so i have nothing to specifically compare it to, but from what i read and hear i am happy with the performance).
Just between me and you i think there is a bit of a conspiracy going with the size of motors boats are packaged with/recommended for - often i see boats in the 5 - 5.5m range with 150s on them - unnecessary expense for the majority of boaties. Anyway better stop as i am starting to rant - thanks again for the advice.
cheers
