    Hornet Trophy 435...optimal power 40 or 50?

I have recently sold my Quintrex Dory (4.2) and looking at the hornet trophy 435. They seem to be a very popular boat with sportfisherman in the estuary/sheltered parts of Moreton bay where I do most of my fishing.

The dealer's pre-packaged rig comes standard with a 30 HP 2 St. I think this is going to be a little underpowered, and my preference is for a 4ST. I am tossing up between a 40 4st and 50 4st. I am looking at either the Honda or the Yammie. I normally run two blokes up, full fuel and light personal/fishing gear.

Can anyone provide advice on the optimal set up remaining cognisant of budget (about 1 grand difference between the 40 and 50) and performance?
    Cheers

    Hey JA

at the risk of being terribly self promoting I have just listed my tinnie in the 4 sale section. Its not a hornet but my be of some interest to you. I think that a 30 is too small imo.

    JA,
there is a heap in the archives about the hornets and horsepower. I've got a 435 that I have customised (very similar to the trophy) and run the 50hp yam 4st. Be careful as weight is a real issue with the hornets. Had mine back many times to Quintrex to rectify the porpoising problems, took 6 months and 14 pages of letters, e-mails and phone calls logged but all fixed now. However it was a very rude shock. The hull is a great design, but, the company is very dissapointing to deal with if you do have problems. If you go the hornet with a 50 insist on a water test before you make the final payment.

The 50 yam on the hornet runs at a top speed of 56km/hr (gps) and revs to 6000rpm. The 40 yam is only a two cylinder, if you are going to be doing much idling the 50 is the way to go as they are much much smoother.

    Good Luck,

    JA,

I own a 1999 435 hornet with a 50 2 st Johno - my mate owns a 2003 400 hornet with a 40 2 st Merc. There is definitely a difference in hole shot with these two boats. In my boat it gets out of the water with no problem, with my mates the passenger generally moves toward the front of the boat to help it get out of the water. I would definitely go for the 50, especially if you are going 4 st because that is even more weight over the stern and may make the hole shot even harder.

A grand is a lot of money, but you may well kick yourself if you don't spend it now - very hard to change at a later date! Don't get me wrong, my mates 400 with the 40hp still gets along great and does get out of the water, it just takes longer than the 50hp.

    Mark:
The 50 yami is 110kg (4 cylinder) whereas the honda 50 (3 cylinder) is 93 kg. By the sound of it, I should place more emphasis on the fact the honda is lighter...? I do like the Honda, but have read a few things about the rough running at low rpms which has made me lean toward the yami

Is the porposing you refer to a result of too much weight regardless of its distribution, or is it a result of too much weight at the rear? To try to too much at the rear, I am ordering the 435 with the optional underfloor fuel tank which should transfer some of the weight further forward. Your thoughts?

I like your idea of requesting a water trial prior to final payment...not sure what the dealer will say....?

Marty: agree about the "poor man pays twice" idea.

Re: Hornet Trophy 435...optimal power 40 or 50?

    Hi JA
My neighbour has the 435 hornet trophy with a 50 Honda 4 stroke and he has mentioned he needs all of that as it is a bit sluggish getting out of the hole. That is the trade off with 4 strokes however.
He does a lot of luring so the need to idle and run at low rpms is very important to him. I suppose it comes down to your needs and budget as you mentioned. The triple carby yammys are a fantastic motor that run exceptionally smooth and maybe the 40hp in this model should be considered. It really does depend on what you are wanting to do but at 93kg it may be an option.

Has your neighbour mentioned any rough running problems at idle/low trolling rpms for the 50 Honda?

Is his 435 a tiller steer or console?

Re: Hornet Trophy 435...optimal power 40 or 50?

Giday JA, there are lots of hornet 435s up here in the Burdekin. The local dealer probably sells more than anyone else and has over 20 years experience. I am looking at buying a new Hornet 435 and my dealer reckons that the Yam 40 4 stroke is no worries. All 4 strokes are a little sluggish at first, but who cares, we dont use them to race. I also have a Quin 370 traveller with a Yam 15 4 stroke. It does 38km/hr on freshwater and once you have had a Yam 4 stroke, you wont want anything else. very smooth, quiet, great for luring, trolling and checking crab pots. Good luck mate

Apologise for the late reply JA, unfortunately work is hindering my Ausfish committments
Neighbour has not mentioned any problems idling or extended work at low rpms. He is I think a bit of a speed merchant so need to take that into consideration with his comments that he feels it maybe a bit underpowered.
As burdekinbarra said, "we don't use them to race"

PS I have a 420 quintrex explorer with a 30hp yammy 2 stroke and I really don't need to go any faster than 38km/hr

    Hey Stunned

Thanks for the follow-up. Just sent you a PM regarding your explorer versus Hornet...

    Thanks
    JA
