    yellowing of fiberglass

    Hey,

I have a 6m glass boat that is only just over two years old and the glass around the front hatch and fore deck is starting go yellow around the edges. There is also the same thing occurring along the very outside where the chine meets the side of the boat. Any suggestions as to how to treat this or if it is normal? The boat has been under cover but not enclosed so it would get a small amount of sun in the morning but not along the sides, so I dont know how the sun would have caused it . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    G'day
The yellowing aundr the hull is caused by the boat sitting in the water. This can only be removed by an acid wash, septone drifter is what I use. Do the whole boat when you do it as it will whiten and brighten the gelcoat. Follow with a polish and wax. As for the yellowing n th foredeck..... what i've found this to be is a fault in the gelcoat. Usually a mixing/release agent related fault. Thats if the acid doesnt remove it from there aswell.

Think Blackened is right about the defect in the fibreglass causing the yellowing.
I used Acetone to get all the polish and crap off the area on my deck and then some 2000 grade Wet 'n Dry sandpaper to cut the glass back till you either get it off or finish up with a dirty great hole!!
If you get too depressed over it and can't sleep, you can always buy some great decking non-slip epoxy paints that work well in covering this sort of problem and make the deck look pretty in the process!

    G'day
I second what pink panther has said. Only a couple of other thoughts...... If rubbing it back and after a little while with 2000 w&d it's notcoming out, leave it as it's probably too deep. Last thing you need is thin gelcoat there. I think it is possible to sand off the suspect areas and re-do with good gelcoat BUT you will not gte an identical match, ever. Close but you wont be gettin the cigar. Just a thought on the non skid paint, being a 2 y/o glass boat make shure it looks like and is a professional job, for resale purposes. And on that note of a 2 y/o hull..... what about warranty? does it cover that kinda thing?

Re: non slip paint for fibreglass

Sounds ike you guy really know what you're talking about.
I've got a Savage Envoy I use for fishing in Cockburn Sound and the deck has already been repainted at some stage... the paint on the deck is now peeling and I want to give it a fresh coat... I wonder what you'd recommend?
