I personelly have never lubed one and towed a lot of k's over the years with no problems

YES I have always greased the Tow Ball .
Doesnt seem to collect any dust or road grime on it or in the hitch , but I do wipe it off & re-grease every few months of before a big trip .

Gday Blaze...never greased or oiled my towball. Towed all manner of trailers from cairns to brissy with no dramas or noise.

i put a light smear of grease on mine have done for years i have a rubber cover on it to so you dont get grease on you if you do rub up against it. hope your back is getting better. cheers bin lookin

I spray mine with that lanolin spray stuff. I actually spray it on most things to help prevent rust and to keep everything functioning well.

I do it infrequently, and wouldn't stress about leaving it for a while, but I don't see any harm in it...

Towball, pointy end of trailer, lanolin spray or grease if i=remember.
Could not care who hits it with knee/shin.
Blaze i spend more energy making sure hitch side ( female end )
is adjusted so she is nice and tight.

I went overboard the first time and layed the grease oin nice and thick. My tow hitch (without the boat on the landy) is just below my crotch line.

Now understand that I also use the landy at times as a work vehicle, and I dress in suits at work - collar tie and all that boring stuff.

I ruined two suits with grease smears just under my b@lls and had a hard time explaining to my wife I had done nothing wrong. By this stage (day two of having got my laptop out the back of the landy, and leaning up (pressing hard against the tow ball) to get my stuff I had completely wiped all the grease off. When questioned there was no proof fo an alibi.

If I was gonna grease again, (which I haven't) I would grease the inside of the hitch that comes from the trailor very lightly and the ball very lightly at start of a long trip / season, then remove it afterwards.

Forgot to mention I also cover the towball with a plastic cover ($1.50 from supa che@p) when not in use to avoid grease stains.

never bothered as was told by a mechanic years ago there was no need, don't know his theory but it hasn't caused any problems except when I borrow my brothers trailer - he uses heaps and I forget about it so that when I or the boss next go around the back to get something out we are covered in grease.

Modified I suppose - I also do a lot off offroading in rugged terrain and had the tow hitch fitted so it wouldn't be ripped out on every decline or ascent, it's not in a usual place - much higher - makes for great towing though.
