IMO you will be struggling with a 55, particularly if there is any wind about, they are a fairly high sided boat with plenty of windage. Also when you work it hard on the 12v it wont last too long. My mate has a similair sized plate boat, with lower sides and hes got an 80 or 82lb? Motorguide which is great. Just my too cents. Ben
A 55 would do the job o.k, although if you can afford a larger model it would be worth the $$. 65 and up will require the purchase of extra batteries as well.
I know of guys using 55's on 5m+ boats and no complaints.
If you are using the boat in areas of strong current, a 55 may struggle ??
Fisherman and Boatowner magazine have a project boat which is exactly the same make, model and size of your boat and they run a Minn kota 55AP. They gave a write up on the performance. They said it was adequate for the job and performed pretty well. They also made a comment that it would struggle moving the boat into a strong breeze for long periods that might apply to the larger models as well.
Issue no.117 if you are interested.
PM me and I will photocopy the page for you.
I purchased the Minn Kota 55AP for my Trailcraft 465 ProFish but yet to use it in anger as the boat hasn't been delivered.
So if i am to go for a 65 pound or a 74 pound i will need two 12v batteries or can you purchase a 24volt ? If so how much approx do these batteries weigh each ?
