Small Hole in My Boat

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site and i think its great. Hoping someone can help me out,

i recently bought a quintrex tinnie second hand, i'm really happy with it except i found a small hole in some of the welding. Now i'm not sure if i'm being overly paranoid or not, but the hole would be no bigger then a needle size, very small, cant even see if it would actully leak etc. but dont want it to get bigger or anything so what would be the best way to fix it, is there anyway without welding as it has a pretty nice paint job that i wouldn't want to wreck too much.

Where abouts on boat is it?

Small holes become big ones at the time you least except it, if it's in a place under stress. If it's under the water , bow or transom i'd be paying someone to fix it.

I bogged one on my old quinny fisherman lucky the fishing wasn't that good.

put the bungs in a full past the hole with water to test for leaks. Other than welding, you could sikaflex it.

Porosity. Not uncomon and there are probably more around the boat filled with paint from the paint job.
Tend to see this more so with some manufacturers, but I am not mentioning names.
You might be able to brush some paint on the area to fill the hole.
I would be keeping a good eye on the area as it may have more bubbles below the weld surface and cause a crack.
Not sure how you would go making a waranty claim if you got it second hand.
How old is the boat?

There is also a product available from Hardware Stores called "Knead It".
It comes in various types but you can get a marine version or an aluminium one.

It is like a big stick of putty and after mixing it, just stuff the hole with it and the boat will collapse before this stuff lets go! About $10.00 .........................

I used it to seal some rust holes on the OUTSIDE of an oil sump and has been there for about four years now and no sign of a leak.

Very easy to work with and with a wet finger you can smooth it out nicely, sand it if you wish and even paint it.

Very fast setting and can be applied under water if necessary.

If you want to get more serious, duck down to the plumbing shop and pick up a two pot mix of Feropre.

This is the epoxy mix from hell and used for anything that needs sticking tohether. Again, very easy to use and very fast setting. A little more "runny" than the Knead It so good for holes.

Pretty cheap at about $30.00 I think and you will die before you use it all up!

Every tinnie owner should carry the Knead It in his boat as it will seal most size cracks and holes even on the water!

Quintrex are very reknown for this, i recently sold my explorer and had cracks welded a few times, goes to show quintrex build quality is c#%p.

I had a Bermuda which is Quintrex made and same thing..It had three pretty good cracks in it when I sold it...they were all welded but still...they were cracks. Sean

HEy Everyone,. thanks for all the advice. The boat i have is about 7 years old, so nothing for me with warranty, i dont think the hole actually goes through the boat. Its uinder water level on the side of the hull. I'm just going to try and fill it. All should be well. Thanks again for the advice guys

The aluminium one is called Aluminox. I have used it to fill minor hole, and it was very effective. Same deal as the knead it.

It does seem to be more common in Quintrex boats, I know because I've owned three of them and I've found it in two of them. Never caused any problems though. I've bought my last Quintrex, my next boat will be either a Fisher or a Polycraft.
