Hey,
i own a 15hp merc with foils and i find on such a small outboard they have little impact but i can still feel them kicking in, i think you would benefit gteatly by putting them on your 40hp, but make sure you look around as there are a range of shapes and sizes to suit different outboards.
I used to have a 15 foot alloy haines with a 50 hp ...it made a real difference did nothing but improve all aspects of its handling....yet i know a guy that had nothing but trouble with his..(boat would pull off to one side sharply, almost flipped it once while in a not so tight turn...)...it must be a boat by boat thing i reckon the best way is to see if you can find someone that has the same boat....
