    Thanks Chris,
is there such a thing as too much floatation? I find this new ball does not dive like the last one. So it is not helping the anchor to release.

Zulu The mechanism for your anchor rope is not a well designed machinery. Compare to forward winch on 4w drives... they have top and bottom rollers as well as 2 side rollers for winch to pull up in any direction without demolishing the wire rope having 4 rollers will stop the cutting of your rope which can be very dangerous if you are anchored near rocky beach. I do not have illustrations but i am sure you know what i mean
see if you can alter the rope director holder or replace with a proper one as sugested

Re your ? is there such a thing as too much floatation I don't think there is.
I use a black plastic 20 litre acid bottle contained in a rope net with a short heavy line with a large stainless "split" ring (like a big key ring) I used to use the grabbing clip that is supposed to slide along the anchor line but is too slow or gets stuck. Also as stated above the system works if you have a large loop or "belly" of line for the ring to slide along and give lift to the anchor as you drive in "the big sweeping arc"

Everyone seems to believe your using the anchor the way it was designed with breakkaways ties and chain on the businesness end so maybee there is a design issue. There would appear to be a hell of alot of strain on the rest of the system to be cutting the rope. I have the same bow roller and the same sharp stainless edges and I'm only using 12 mm silver rope thats as soft as butter and as easy to cut.

If you have to buy another anchor why not just try a cheap old bendable reef pick and use your chain and see how you go? There must be a source of the old black thick walled 20 lt acid bottles around too, couldn't get a much cheaper simpler system.

    Cheers

maybe put a d-shackle on the locking pin above the roller and run the line through there... it may provide a buffer, keeping the rope away from those sharper edges..

You could also do a 180deg and pull the rope going astern till it lifts the anchor then you're good to recover the rest of the anchor rode without much pressure on it. Worth considering...flatstrap

Had that problem with the anchor rope fraying. I took the bolt out of a U bolt, and fitted the U bolt onto the bow sprit so as the rope runs through it. (the U bolt that is) Does away with rubbing on any sharp edges. Done that about 3 years ago and haven't had any problems since.

zulu, what length of chain are you using if you are having that many losses - also the bow roller looks a little short, you would be knocking the gelcoat on your bow around a fair bit - not sure what the answer is other than maybe the ties are too strong

    Re: Help! Breaking anchor ropes.

Hey, I have exactly the same setup on the savage,
I am also using a m/ba pick an ball with s/s ring 10mm rope an 3m chain.
I am with Foxy, good anchor system but when your hooked up good on rough ground, your hooked up GOOD, an have pinged the rope a few times
(heart in mouth on the odd occasion) I might add

Personally, I am not real keen on the front roller either and really should retire it but I think by taking out a CHEAPER bend over type pick or 2, 3 for the chunky bottom and swapping over where needed you can safely kill 2 birds with one stone so to speak

Popping the anchor from the stern?????
Is there any difference to a TRAWLER hooking up over rough ground and going straight to the bottom in no time? (SCARY THOUGHT)

Any way mate good luck and if you did decice to replace the front roller it certainly wouldnt be a bad thing

is your bowsprit made of stainless ? , if it is you could have round bar welded to the front of sharp edge on the front of sprit to take away sharp edge,

My bow sprit has the edges rolled over to prevent that. Get yourself a new one with rolled edges & all your issues will be gone.

Thanks to all for their input. Like the idea replacing/modify bow roller. Also using standard pick, and carrying Mooloolaba reef pick for the hard to hold areas. I think part of the problem may have also have been not a big enough ''sweeping arc''of rope. I keep a large basket for the rope behind the passenger seat and deploy/gather the rope/anchor from this side. I keep it on this side for balance reasons, the only downfall is you have to rely on crew to keep an eye out for the rope, because I have little vison from the drive seat.

    Thanks again Troy.
