I was wondering what's the best way to store the flares, V sheet, torch etc, and where do you mount your EPIRBs?
Do you keep the EPIRB in a screw top container with the flares etc, or mounted within reach?
Most EPIRBS come with a mounting assembly so it can be screwed to a bulkhead etc.
I would not be storing it anywhere that is complicated. If you need it, then you are in dire straights and need to be able to grab it in an instant and activate it, rather than fumbling for it inside a container, tucked in here, or over there or somewhere.
Flares, v-sheet and torch can go in a side pocket or cabin pockets.
Epirb is mouted beside drivers seat within easy reach. Flares and V-Sheet in W/P container under front hatch with Life Jackets but with easy acess. Not pushed into a corner that you can't get them out in a hurry if you had too.
Here's more info on safety gear, this organisation sets the benchmark for State and Territory marine safety agencies. It's a pdf file to download listing the standards that the States should eventually fall into line with.
Mine is stowed in a waterproof safety grab bag. It hangs on the inside of my console, where it can be grabbed easily should it be needed.
Conatains flares, torch, whistles signal mirror, , green marker dye, V sheet, hand held compass and soon to have a hand held VHF radio that will be in its own individual waterproof pouch.
