    2 Important Words...... SHOP AROUND

I have my Ally Craft insured with Club Marine for $19K and it cost me $424 a year.

Shop around, most major companies do boat insurance.

One thing i found out, if you have a trailer coupler lock/security thingy, it cuts your excess down alot.

    Re: boat insurance

Be very careful when shopping around for boat insurance. I went through this process a while ago and read all the fine prints.
Some/alot of the insurance companys had in the fine print that they dont cover the boat for damage while it is being transported on the road. ie towing it on the trailer
    I went with Club Marine.

Shane is right - but your comprehensive on your car could cover it -- mine does.

    RACQ, $40K BOUT $400-00.

Cover transportation, boating mishaps, plastic bags round the engine etc if the motor blows up from an intrusion, I reakon they are worth there weight in giold, they had no problem paying up when a storm hit the house and hit the electrical components even when I had my storm dates wrong and I was a week out with the lightning strikes, there answer was, you have been a good customer and payed on time, so we will honour the committment and pay up.

    Say no more...

I have my boat, trailer, motor, accessories, gear etc all insured.

Total cover $15k plus Public Liability $10m.

    Costs $20 per month.

Was previously with Club Marine (too expensive) now CGU via nab.

I can help if anyone wants a quote.

    Re: boat insurance

the interesting part with boat insurance is to see who the underwriter is...if it is not a large insurance company then be careful. My policy is with Club but underwritten by Allianz.

    Re: boat insurance

Sean, if your house is insured check with the insurer as some of them underwrite boats as well. Mine is with CGU and my excess is very small compared to what I have seen in these columns and I have had claims on them and they have always come to the party with no problems at all. I would think that maybe at the minimum you should get some sort of coverage as you could be involved in an incident that is totally some one else fault and you will suffer inproportionately for it.

    Re: boat insurance

You have to be very careful with boat insurance.
With my last boat my sons girlfriend was holding it and a swell hit the boat and it ended up on the shale.
I told the the fibreglass repairer what had happened and he told me not to say that as they would class that as negligence and would not pay.
His advise was to say the anchor let go.

    Re: boat insurance

I went with RACQ but I am a Gold card member as they were one of the cheapest. Although going with the cheapest isn't necessarily the cleverest option. As per previous advice check with your current house contents insurer, you will get a discount. Might pay to change to another insurer if you can put all your policies in together. A good idea anyway, saves disputes as to whether say, carpet is part of your house or contents if you have to claim. Check on the internet. DOn't forget if you want to tow a floatie or skis etc you will have to include a towing option and you will need to identify what security precautions you are using. A chain and padlock just won't get you any leeway with them, best if you look at Aldi (Mango Hill) for wheel locks for $40 and probably a trailer hitch lock about $30 from Supercheap or a marine store.

At this stage I will stick with Club thanks..am getting another quote at renewal time but will only be fro ma specialist marine insurer..most of the other insurers aren't interested or else want around 2000 - 2500 per annum for the insurance.

I could let you know some great stories about RACQ when it comes to claims time...NRMA are excellent for car insurance and Suncorp for house etc but they don't want to know about my boat..out oftheir range.
