    Kevlacat 5.2m

I was originally settled on and looking for a 550 Outsider Cruise craft, but the more i think about it the better a Kevlacat 5.2m is looking. Like the idea of a soft ride and cat stability.
There is one currently for sale in Brisbane for $51k, its a 1994 model with 2001 yamaha 70hp 2 strokes. Does any one know what they are worth, its sound a bit expensive to me, but i have not seen any others for sale to compare it to.

    Thanks,
    XR

    Hey XR,

I take it that's the boat springwood has.

It's a beautiful boat, and is a blue marlin series, one of the last ones made I would say.

You would be flat out finding another that year model for that price, let alone a newer one.

That is generally the price for that boat. You will find a 1990 model for as low as 38k, but they are generally snapped up before you can make the call. Rare as hen's teeth, awesome boats. Poor use of small cabin space.

    Otherwise you can't go wrong.

    Regards

    Darren

    Darren,
Yes, it is the one at Springwood marine, have you seen it in the flesh, if so what is the condition like?
Do you know what the difference is with a Blue marlin series?
and i not seen a 5.2 in the flesh my self for many years, what do they have in the cabin area, and can it be arranged to sleep a couple of guys.

I will be in Brisy next week end, and will be having a look at it then (if it is still for sale).

    Thanks,
    XR

    Re: Kevlacat 5.2m

    Hey XR,

I have seen it. Looks like a fine rig in pretty good nick. It was obviosly used by some serious sportfisherman the way she is decked out.

Not sure of the differences with the Blue Marlin (maybe black marlin??) but i am sure they have slighyt differences with the deck, and even more suited to sport fishing, rigged out from new with all the gear. The Statesman version of a Kevlacat I guess.

The cabin is very small, but could sleep a couple of guys at a pinch when desperate enough. It just depends on your priorities. There is no way I could comfortably sleep more than a few hours in there i'm sure. But others could.

There is a couple of guys on here with a 5.2, hopefully they will chime in and help out.

    Regards

    Darren

Sleeping wise you have a couple of guys with their feet down the tunnels or one guy diagonal in the cabin and one in a swag on the deck. The deck is wide enough for my swag to fit sideways and to get a comfortable sleep.

    Re: Kevlacat 5.2m

Mate they are a great boat. I have one which I repowered about 4 months ago with 60 hp high thrust yamaha 4 strokes. You can not beat them for ride, and fishability !!!!! I do alot of light tackle sportfishing, and a fair chunk of diving and they are second to none. The only problem you will find is the engines. I also had a pair of 70 yamahas onit ( as does my brother who also owns one) and they are a very thirsty little engine if you do alot of trolling etc., and as most of the earlier models only had the smaller tanks ( 112l per side) it limits your range. There were a few made with the larger tanks, but not many. ( the new , current 5.2s have 180 l per side)!!!
They are not a fast boat, but as you know, you can very rarely travel faster then 23-25 kts ( WOT 31kts) most days anyway, and the beauty of the cat is you can do those speeds 90% of the time!!!!
As far as price goes, a good one which hasnt been repowered, ( which is something you will have to do in the future anyway) is around mid to high 40's. A good one, which has been repowered etc, and has all the gear is still getting around the high 50's to early 60's !!!, which isint bad for a boat thats 10-14 years old!!! If you get them to knock a few grand off it, then buy it. You wont be disappointed !!!

I have had one and did about 500 engine hours in it. It was our first cat and could't believe how much better than the 5.5m monos we had before it. Ride and stability are awesome. Only boat I have found better in that size range was the Sailfish 5.5m that i owned after the Kevlacat. The sailfish beats the kevla in every aspect except dryness. You won't regret buying it.

    Darren, Smithy, Fly 1, Perko,

Thanks guys for the info. Sounds as though they are a good thing and bet the equivalent size monos hands down for ride.

Fly 1, when you say the 70hp yam 2strokes are heavy on fuel, do you have any rough figures for say cruising speed etc. I am not big into trolling, more bottom bashing ect.
Also you mention 31knots, is that really all they will do with the 70's, i thought they would go a bit harder. Most boats i have owned have had top ends of around 40knots, although you cannot normally use it, its good to be able to crank it up if the weather glasses out.
Last year i tested a new 2400 kevlacat with 140hp 4st Suz and it did about 48knots!
I have considered allowing for new motors and sounds like 90hp etecs might be the go. The ones on it are 2001 models so probably would cost about $15k to upgrade to etecs.
Is it worth allowing to upgrade the motors, or will it over capitalise the boat.

Apparantly the trailer is basically not good, so $51K is starting to sound a bit high.

    Smithy,
sounds as the hull area inside the cabin is long enough to lay down for and aft, on each side, is that what you mean?

    Thanks,
    XR

    Re: Kevlacat 5.2m

If your lucky you may get a few more knots out of it, but low 30's are about it !!! At cruising speeds you will use around 18 - 20 l/hr per engine so they are alittle thirsty for their size. I looked at the 90 ETECs , 70 and 90hp suzukis and a few other makes as well, but the big problem is weight. The original 5.2m kcats have small pods, and arent really designed to carry the weight of the modern 4 strokes. The beauty of the 60hp high thrust yamahas, is they weigh only a few kg per engine more than the old 70hp 2 strokes!!! , and perform as well as them !!!! (using about half the fuel!!!)
My brother also has a 5.2 and we have done numerous days together with the 2 boats, and the difference at the bowser at the end of the day has been amazing!!! Yes, a few more knots would be nice on those very glassy days, but I dont think its worth overcapitalising on the boat for a few days a year?! If you can get it for mid 40's, and re power it with 4 strokes, you will have a brilliant little boat for around 60k!! ANd believe me, there is not a mono on the market that can compare with them for ride and room!!

I can happily 2nd the above comments. I've had mine for a year now and have no regrets. As Fly 1 says my next step will be to fit the 60 Yammie 4 strokes.

    Cheers Chris
