Re: White Ants in the Play-Pen

    Report #20

Saturday we worked our way to Nth Brisbane on a shopping expedition.... and all we had to show at the end of it was 2 rod holders, a router and some windscreen wipers for the car! Pretty disappointing considering we'd had a long list of items we were prepared to buy.... but nobody had quite what we wanted.

All was not lost though, as Kingtin carved up a ham for our dinner....

Good food and good company.... what a great way to end the day

Sunday we glassed the other planing straights,

and a section of the keel.

Then started cutting out some stringers

Used a planer to chamfer the bow end,

then Ross got to play with the new router while he rounded off some edges.

Up until now it was pretty plain sailing as we were able to use the originals as rough templates for the inner two stringers.

The outer two were too damaged, so we had to start from scratch with them, a lot of measuring and a few ummm [smiley=argue.gif] discussions later and we had it figured out.

Hey, where did he go? Oh well, looks like I better do this one myself!

This is where we were at the end of the day

The cross sections between the inner stringers aren't staying, they're just there for support for now.

Note: Stringers are being cut from 19mm CD Structural Ply Hoop A Bond

Re: White Ants in the Play-Pen

    hi guys
over the years there has been a lot of debate on the best way to get glass to stay laminated to ply.
one theory is to paint the ply with resin with no catalsyt so it soaks (leaving for 24hrs before glassing) into the ply and when glassed over the catalsyt in the resin will send off the resin that has soaked into the ply
theory 2 is to add catalsyt to the resin that is be used to precoat the ply, but the catalsyt is add at a greatly reduced ratio so the resin has time to soak in before hardening.
Also need to remember that its a catalsyt that you are using and not a hardener so 5mm in 20 litres will start the chemical reaction needed to set the resin where a hardener will need a set ratio to cure properly
    great work.
This time I used the theory 2 method

You're referring to the meat of course?

    kev

A ship in harbour is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.

now come on Kev, I'm only seeing you carving the meat not eating it LOL but I'm sure I could sit down to a slab of meat like that and be called some unhuman type names

Glad to see there's a few of us in the same boat Now where's your photos guys?

You are so right about the dust getting everywhere.... don't know how we'll ever get the sheds, and the stuff in them, clean again. Yes, it's drifted into the second shed and even into a closed room where we store our camp gear!

Covering yourself up as much as possible reduces the inevitable itching.... should have done this in winter, as it's a bit hot for that at the moment.

Glad you had fun fishin blaze. Sorry the dpi weren't more interested in your tommy ruff's did you catch anything else?

Looks like we'll be doing a bit of a mixture on the glass over ply theories. Coating the bases and ends of stringers 24hrs before bogging in.... then coating the rest just prior to glassing over.

Got any theories to share with others who are doing timber stringers? Prefered timbers, best ways to join if using ply, where to join, etc.?

The 19mm ply we're using comes in maximum 2400mm length sheets, so we have had to join two pieces to get our total length. In hindsight, we think we should have priced and compared weight of full length hoop pine or another termite resistant/durable timber so we didn't have to have a join at all.

We thinks, we are having trouble with the theory that the timber is only a mould and extra weight, and not really there for strength.

Re: White Ants in the Play-Pen

I was orignally going to use timber and looked at laminated beams 50mm x 250mm. If I had to join ply to get total lenth, I would use a overlap joint of at least 300mm and cut at 45 degrees. Does that make sense(some times I know what I mean and no one else does).
You are right in that the timber does have strenth, but after seeing what I see with floors coming out of boats and all that is stopping them breaking up is the glass layed over the timber, if I was to use timber I think I would layup more layers than required for the under laying fear I would have of the timber failing again.
    cheers

no matter which way you go the end result will be a much stronger boat that will be right for many years
