Bev
I noticed something on one of your pics - see attached and circled, looks like a navigation light on top of the cabin (except it's red and on the wrong side)
Is it a light, or a beer can /
Could it be that you've started re-fitting play pen?

Hi Mike,
It's a black powder puff thingy (can't think of the proper name atm).... putting it on the gelcoat during sanding lets you get a more even finish.
Thanks Bev
Didn't think it was a beer can.
how do you use it ? With the gelcoat, after the gelcoat, mixed in, sprinkled on like dusting with icing sugar ? Keen to hear more about the technical aspects of said black powder puff thingy and its uses ?
Also the port looking light applicator, which I auume is not actually the black powder - do you get it when you buy the black powder, or is it a seperate item ?
Why black powder - is that how it comes ?
Did you guys happen to have one, or did you have to get one of these too ?
or maybe did the glass friend have one ?
So many questions Mike
Glass friend told us to get a black powder puff thingy so that is what I asked the fibreglass supplier for.... and he knew exactly what I was talking about.
The black powder stuff (in the white section) can be bought with or without an applicator (port light looking thingy). I assume it's black so it shows up on most colours.
It is used dry, dabbed on similar to a ladies face powder, then you sand..... any black bits showing means there are low spots in the gelcoat.... so you sand some more, until it is all even.
It's similar to putting a shadow coat on a car during panel work to make sure you have got all the dents out.
I will try remember to get some pics this afternoon when Ross is sanding.
Very interesting thank you, didn't know about that. [smiley=dankk2.gif]

Mike, it's a 3M product called Dry Guide Coat. The blurb on one website says..... A method for identifying surface imperfections such as pinholes and deep scratches in primer. Requires no masking and there is no dry time involved. Can be used for both wet and dry sanding.
I love reading these updates, when is the ETA now?

They also make good boat trailer reflector tape. YAY for 3M.
Cheers

Hi there, when it's all said and done are you going to keep the same name on the boat?
Looking at the colour and history "WHITE ANT" might be more appropriate.
Also as I've said before, this is the best forum story I've ever had the good fortune to stumble across.
Keep up the good work. Also you must let everyone know when the 1st launching is going to take place. I'm sure there's more than a few readers that would be happy to supply a beer and cheer you on!
Cheers Mark
the post gets more interesting now that we are into the technical side of things.

Mike the Post It Notes was a stuff up by 3M which a guy realised could be to their benefit.

Mark, was pondering this question when I first started reading this post but couldn't think of an alternative which was so obvious. WOuld have to do the whole renaming thing I guess, keeping the old name somewhere on the boat, blessing the new name (with lots of amber liquid of course) etc
Bev and Ross, where would ytou be launching the boat so we can make arrangements to come and help bless the boat.

One of the sad signs of our times is that we have demonized those who produce, subsidized those who refuse to produce and canonized those who complain.

Cheers guys what a great thread ........ you have inspired (not sure i should thank u 4 that) me to strart my own refitt project although not as big as yours i'm sure it will keep me itchy for weeks. the tech side of things has been great, and the "never ever again" thoughts have guided/altered some of my plans. hope rest of the project turns out well 4 you it seems like things have gone well so far.

Hi Az, it's impossible to predict an ETA. Originally, I was so confident we'd be ready for Easter.... how wrong was I!Originally Posted by Az

Have to agree Mike, 3M come up with some good ideas... and their stuff is usually good. When I am fetching supplies, He-who-sands has me under strict instructions to only buy 3M sandpaper... reckons he'll never use any old brand again.Originally Posted by catchy_fishy
Yes we're keeping the Play-Pen name.... we may have to incorporate a few white ants into the name design thoughOriginally Posted by mark221263
Thanks Mark We're glad others have found it so interesting.... and appreciate all the encouragement we've received. Also as I've said before, this is the best forum story I've ever had the good fortune to stumble across.
Bev - Keep the name Play Pen, but get a few stickers of termites crawling around the hull... You could even do the "racing stripe" in termitesOriginally Posted by ColacGirl
