    Leaf SPrings

    Hi team.

If I upgrade to 1.4t axle, should I also upgrade my springs?

    If so, how many leafs?

How do I know if my current springs are shot?

hi smelly, the reason i raise the question of the spring rating is that if the ATM of your boat and trailer is 1300kg then 1200kg springs are not much use to you (example only). any spring retailer will tell the correct springs if you give them aggregate trailer mass (combined weight of trailer, boat, motor&fuel load etc) you can get them weighed at public weight bridges

Don't know about how to answer you unless you tell us how many leaf you currently have and how many axles, weight of boat. My little 15 footer glass boat sits on 5 leaf spring, single axle, which is a little overkill if the boat is less than 750KG which it definitely is.

If you upgrade the trailer, I don't think Qld Transport would care too much, but if you down size the weight capacity of the springs/axle, you might be tampering with something you should consult with their specifications first.

Thanks - I have 7 leaf springs at moment.

How do I tell if they need replacing?

mate most 7 leaf spring i have seen on the net are 750kg,that gives you 1500kg total ATM.
that should be enough for rig ,see if you can put it over the scales then you know for sure

most boat trailer springs rust before they wear or loose tention(unless they are galv) check for wear from the leaves rubbing . I'm guessing they are slippers so look at the area where it contact the trailer. apart from that i can't help much more

Get rid of the springs and hangers...go to torsion bars....nothing to bloody rust then and they work just as good..

    G'Day again, Smelly.

Mate, if they still have a decent arch in them,
and they're not rusty, and the boat sits even on
the trailer, then leave em alone.

If you would like some pic`s of mine then let me know...will post em for you...not quite sure how they work...think there`s a couple of big mutha springs in there working in opposite directions...but once again there is bugger all to worry about rusting on these once set up properly...cheers Mick.

    Re: Leaf SPrings

No need to change the springs if you upgrade the axle, in fact it could be a bad idea, as the boat may get flogged because the springs are to stiff. The only reason to upgrade the springs is if the load is going to be heavier.

If the springs are rusted to much, or otherwise stuffed, replace them with the same size (or smaller if the ride is harsh)
