I am building up a new axle/ brake kit for my exisiting trailer.
Does any one have any idea (dim from non-machined end of axle) where the caliper brackets are located on the axle - without having to assemble it first?
I want to be able to simply mark on the axle where these brackets go and then bring it to work where I gan get them welded on....
gday smelly,the caliper will sit in front of the axle so set your axle up in the vice split pin holes in the vertical popsition.now fully assemble one end dry,now you will have a better idea of what is going on.now bolt the caliper to the flange plate and position over the disk check for clearance on outside edge of disk and tighten caliper to disk ,now push flange plate hard away from caliper whith a screwdriver and tack the flangeplate.loosen the caliper and the disk should spin freely.note spray the disk whith anti spatter and only tack whith disk on the axle,when assembling i use locktite on caliper bolt threads and antisieze on caliper sleeves.hope this helps.
Once the axle is fitted, pack the bearings, and fit the
rotors as you normally would.
attatch the rabbit ears (mounting brackets) to the calipers
finger tight, and fit the caliper to the rotor, adjust the height
until the top of the friction material on the brake pad is
even with the outside edge of the rotor, and tighten the
adjuster bolt on the inside pad, so the caliper is
clamped to the rotor.
The calipers must be in the 3 o'clock position, starboard side,
and 9 o'clock port side, both pointing towards the drawbar.
Have the sliding bushes(that the mount bolts go thru)
positioned as close as to the rotor side, so that the caliper
can slowly "self adjust" out as the pads wear.
Once this is done, loosen the mount bolt so you can
sit the mount bracket as snug as possible to the axle,
tighten them up again, then weld it up.

Why do the calipers have to be in the 3 and 9 o'clock position?
The auto ones are more or less 12 o'clock.

These bunny ears,are not quite set up correctly. They are more like 2 and 10 o'clock positions.Note the wire pull is not quite straight, as paddles mentioned.
To weld on the bunny ears,you have to set up the brakes first,then weld.
The 3 & 9 O clock position is adjustable,by turning the axle,but when the axle is fitted to the springs,particularly if you weld on the base plate for the springs,then you are stuffed, if you are not set up correctly.
