    Bigfoot????

I just went and had a look at a 5.2 metre plate boat with a Mercury Bigfoot 60hp. Can anyone tell me anything about these Mercs??

It's a 99 model, looks in good condition, started second turn of the key(but i think it had been sitting awhile).

If anyone can help me that would be great.

If i get all good responses I'll be telling the finance minister the boat will be mine.

    Re: Bigfoot????

i thought the big foot was a commerical out board used by the pros. When i bought my boat couple months ago there was one there the same ready for delivery and it had a 60 bigfoot on it. the dealer told me it was for commerical use. more expensise.

sorry Mike, it took me a few beers to read your post properly, the boat was made locally in Ingham. It looked like a very strong and sturdy boat

Mercury Bigfoot - The lower end is oversized and is reported to have a sturdier construction. other than that, not much of a difference from a "standard" mercury.

There are others with more knowledge on the electrics of these beasts. I know that there was a small problem with the elctronics but is relatively easily fixed. Not sure if it was on this model though????

    G'day
To my understanding the bigfoot were bought out with the bigger gearcase so they had the ability to swing the larger props.

Used mainly in higher thrust applications requiring greater torque such as houseboats, yachts and commercial operations.

I will no doubt be corrected but this was my understanding

    Re: Bigfoot????

I used to have a 60hp Bigfoot on a 5m Halfcab about 6 years back.

It was a good donk, had plenty of low down grunt to get the old bus straight out of the hole.

As with any 2nd hand outboard I'd recommend getting a mechanic to check it out first, or at the very least carry out some basic tests like checking the compression out on each cylinder, and checking the gearbox oil for water etc. (there's probably some good posts outlining what to check if you do a search on here)
    Cheers,

    Re: Bigfoot????

    Thanks for the info fella's.

I have decided against that setup. My mates brother in law is selling a seajay 445 escape side console with a 50hp yammie. Since the loan is been pre approved, i hope to have it by the end of the weekend.

I was very happy with the condition of both the boat and motor.

    Both are 2002 models.
