4 Mt Hornet With 40 EFI Merc What Do You Think
Gday all,
am looking towards an up grade on the tinny and am thinking about the 4mt quinny hornet trophy with a 40 efi merc on the back.
Does any one have any comments, positive or other on the rig as a whole, or boat / motor as seperate items.
All feed back is appreciated
Cheers

Re: 4 Mt Hornet With 40 EFI Merc What Do You Think
G'day Brian,
I have a 400 Hornet Trophy with side console and 40HP Merc light on the back. I have done extensive mods to her which included putting in a 100lt livewell in the front casting deck extension. I also have a 55lb Minn Kota Bow mount on the front. One up with a full livewell and all my gear she goes really well, add another person and their gear and its a bit sluggish out of the hole, but once it is she still gets along. This little rig is perfect for what I need, which is mainly estuary work flicking soft plastics for bream, flatties, trevs and jacks. The only thing I plan to change in add a further extension to the front deck (back to the console) and hopefully put a 40 E-tec on in the next 12 months or so, hopefully this will help with the hle shot. I may try a foil before then, but I am still researching that.
Let me know if you need anymore info.
Here is a pic of my baby.
Cheers

Welcome back JT!
Brian - I've been in John's boat, and it's a great little boat. You can customise them to suit how you want them pretty easily, and if I was going to get a tinny, these would be what I'd be looking at for sure

thanks JT.
Would imagine with the front live well full and a second person, that would be approx 150kg extra load your carrying?
Hows the ride with the hornet hull, thinking of that mongrel afternoon wind chop you get in the bigger estuarys/dams.
Do you have an under floor tank, if so how large and what kind of economy are you getting.
Ive also got the 55lb minn kota, does she push the 4 meter around ok, mines only the 48" shaft.
cheers for the help

Re: 4 Mt Hornet With 40 EFI Merc What Do You Think
G'day Brian,
With all the extra weight she still rides well, as its an alloy, open boat I won't kid you, you still get some hull slap and with wind chop still get some spray, but that's going to happen with most boats like this one.
My hornet has an 40lt underfloor tank with gauge on the console, I keep a spare 10lt jerry can in the back too "just in case" but I have never come close to using it. During practise sessions for the last Flathead Classic we ran around the Pin all day and total cost would have been around $15.00. Since I put on the electric my fuel bill has dropped, now that I don't need all the stops and starts to hold position.
The 55lb Kots is more than enough for a 4 metre. I have the 48" shaft as well and that's enough for the Hornet. If you do get a Hornet have the dealer include a mounting plate for your electric, it makes moutning easier. I don't have one but wish i did.
If you are serious about getting one I won't mind taking you for a spin if you like. Just PM me and I'll see what we can organise, might even fit in a fish .
Hey Dan, nice to be back in Oz. Just about to post up details of the next bream social, we'll be up your way. I'll give you a ring if I have a spare spot.
Cheers
John
