G'day all,I'm slowly getting some gear together to convert my tiller-steer 4.2 Dory to forward steering and I'm tossing up whether it's worth the $300 quoted in a catalogue for a BERMUDA centre console. The perspex screen is $189.Has anyone got one of these consoles? Also are they large enough to fit a Teleflex Quick Connect helm??..I see the helm makers suggest 8" or 10" radius for the cable. How much room on top to put a sounder/GPS combo & other accessories???My boat's only got a 20hp Merc (actually 25hp) and I know the boat can take up to 40hp but most of my fishing is done by myself and she gets along very well once on the plane...I'm not looking to get airborne (which is dangerous for a start) and with my weight further forward I'll have better visbilty/trim/safety etc.I've been fishing for most of my life but relatively new to actually owning a boat.Sorry if I seem a dumb@&$*
Would it be better to have a console made out of aluminium??..or make one out of fibreglassed ply??
Does anyone know of a good fabricator...I live in VIC but would pay shipping.
Moater,
i've got a side console on my boat (to keep as much room as i could).
its a Bermuda had it on for a few months now so far so good. seems to be quite strong.
it holds sonder, guages and helms nicely.
seems to be a cheaper option than to get one made
i first brought a centre console but it took up a fair bit of room in my 4.6 dory
Moater just a thought, the further you go forward the bumpier it gets and in my experience small boats and a centre or forward center console needs to be one high enough a person can stand at comfortably.
My old 4.2m was a sofer riding tinny than yours it had no seat at the CC, wouldn't have used a seat unless in the best of conditions or trolling.
Thanks for the answers folks. I've been looking at the possibility also of using a side console but I'm a bit concerned about the weight distribution (since I'm fading away to an elephant - put on about 40kg since giving up smoking and having a bad back + not being able to get out much also 'cause I've had to look after our little fella, now 2,alot for a good year or so...due to my wife's bad health...a SH!!T LOAD of bad 'luck'...or maybe a curse?? ).
I'm thinking about cutting out some of the floor to put the fuel tank up towards the front and maybe another compartment for the battery...I wanna take away weight from the stern and lower the centre of gravity to help with allround stability, both at rest and while travelling. With my first boat,an old Savage Snipe 12ft I cut a hole in the floor to put the the fuel tank up towards the front and got an aluminium box made up to cover it and the boat got up on the plane better + handled heaps better etc..added a couple of handy rod holders too plus stored some lighter stuff on top out of the way.
I like the idea of being able to stand and drive, using my legs as shock-absorbers + having better visbility. There's a couple of options by the sound of things and I know that there will times when I have to shift things around a bit whatever console I go with.
Thanks for your input!
Darren PS:I weigh around 120kg which is a real lot of baggage
