Re: Hydrofoils Permatrim or SE sport 300?????

I have heard that permatrim get the nod as i put a post on a couple of months ago about he same topic. Most of the people came bak with prematrim.
Hope this helps. I think either will do depending on motor setup of course.

I had the SE Sports on my Seafarer Vagabond with a 115 yammy. It made a big difference and planned cleanly at 8knots or so less. Stearing was also easier most of the time. Having said that I took it off in favour of electric-hydraluic trim tabs and they are the ducks nuts.

    Hi OZSCOTT

As you can see in the avatar I too have a Vag.

Did I understand correctly that you have just one 115 Yam on your boat?

Also I'm interestesd in your comments re the foils amd the trim tabs.

I initially fitted a pait of foils to the motors and that did give a better hole shot and also a slower planning speed as you stated.

I have since also fitted trim tabs and find that better again ie the boat adddresses the sea square on not on one side of the vee as it often did depending on wind and sea conditions as well as when dealing with 40 ft Riv. etc wakes which really negated the point of having a deep vee boat.

Prior to fitting foils and the tabs I lifted the motors as I said in a post to Booty in Blue, to optimize their performance and to ensure cavitation plates were on or above the water surface during medium to higher speed operation.

My question then is whether in your experience and opinion I could expect any benfit from the removal of the foils rather than keeping them as well as the tabs ie the current situation.

    Thanks

    Cheers

    Almost sounds like a broach?
I've got a permatrim on my 90 Honda 5m plate boat.
She porposed a bit before I fitted it, runs great now.

Hi Chimo - my machine is an older girl. #Photo attached. #I was advised by several people who are old salts not to have both the SE and the tabs on - I did not try it with #both on.

    Hi OzScott

Thanks for that. So one or two motors?

Strange tho as I has Lindsay Fry's guys fit the tabs at Seafarer and no one suggested I take the foils off and they were on when they put the tabs on at the factory. I might ask Lindasy.

    Thanks again.

Single mate - 93 model 115 2 stroker with a stainless prop. She will plane cleanly at 23kph and will wind out to 65kph with 4 boofheads, 140l of petrol and the gear. Even pre-tabs she punched out of the hole quickly. I have had 5 adults and 5 kids in her plenty of times and its very stable, partic since the tabs. Wind sheer is no longer an annoyance.

I would ask Lindsay - but you can also call the Bennett guys - they were some of the people who advised me to take the foil off. I have a mate with a 22' Carribean with an inboard. He got tabs put on and took it to Peel from Raby with the tabs and the hydrofoil on it that was there pre-tabs. It handled like a porker. He had trouble steering and getting it trimmed right. Whilst there a bloke was talking to him and told him he had the same prob and suggested taking the ray off...we did and on the way back it was a different beast; very good and stable etc. I think it depends on the boat, but the foil can fight the effect of the tabs.

Why dont you take off the foils for an experiment and get out without them - good excuse to hit the water!!

    Cheers

PS. Yours would plane even on one motor wouldnt it?

Re: Hydrofoils Permatrim or SE sport 300?????

    Hi ozscott

Yes will plane on one motor but likes rough water to do it better. Linsay set it up with 13.25 20 Rakers so fairly tall props. Rakers like to be up and can operate as surface piercers as opposed to Vipers the need to be lower in the water. With my boat / motor set up I would probably have to go back to 18s on Vipers if i wanted to change. One 18 Viper would push it onto the plane easier and on smooth water but I would lose economy thru the range and top speed.

Lindsay sometimes fits one set of foils on to a dual motor setup by putting one foil on the outside cav plate of each motor. I have not tried that but in his case there probably isn't much he hasn't had a go at with his rigs over the years.

My tabs are not bennetts but are the electric only Lenco's that Lindsay uses on the new Seafarers. Nice units.

Re the Carribean, I wonder if the set up was such that the foil was very low in the water and creating drag even at speed? With an inboard you cannot adjust the motor up so it would have been sensible to take it off and reduce drag and improve steering etc.

    Cheers Chimo,

Yep - your probably right about his inboard. The Lencos are what he has - good units. I like the Bennetts aswell. I fitted the Bennetts myself and they were easy to fit, but straight electrics would be easier again because no hydraulics.

    See you on the water.

Arrghh...old threads...gotta love bring them back to life. My 99 model Yammy 115 that is now on my Vag has the SE SPorts 300 already fitted to it. I am going to try it and see how it goes - this motor is set so the Cav plate is a smidge above the bottom of the V where the old motor was a smidge under so it should be sweet. I will report back, but probably not for another week or so.

I have a 5.2m SportsmanCraft with Pod and 90HP Honda. It's a bit sluggish out of the hole but once up one the plane it handles really well. Tomorrow I'm going to fit a Permatrim then take it out on Sunday (if I can find a deckie). Will post the results after.
