I have a licence. I sell VHF radios at work and most of the time when selling them you would sware you were asking people to cut off their arm when you tell them that they require a licence. Cant see what the big deal is, but its well worth doing.

The fact that VHF use really isn't policed provides no real incentive for anyone to get a licience.
Get rid of RBTs and speed cameras and our roads would be mayhem, a bit like the airwaves by the sounds of it
It's interesting how very dangerous this licence is and yet that seems OK to many.
I suspect it is because of the false assumption that those with the licence are safer than those without so there is some- 'you get what you deserve' in it ....BUT what about the converse situation, if 40nm offshore and someone with a licence put's out a distress call, to as it happens the only boat that can rescue them in a timely manor, will that someone without the licence hear it?? or simply fear it???
Bad regulations are bad regulations regardless of those with a passion for these matters being in favour, history is littered with them and yes many were in favor of those also.

and shanoss and to all the other stubborn people who have put their comments up. please unwire ur vhf's and throw em in the bin and stick to ur 27mgs. im sick to death of hearing the likes of these people trying to justify not learning the rules and knowledge of a tool that could save not only your life but someone elses.
Mate, has it occured to you that we feel the same way about your self-righteous rhetoric? You should not assume that we are all a bunch of monkeys babbling away into our sets. I'll think i'll ignore your suggestion about my radio and keep it right where it is thankyou.
You must be lucky and not do your boating around Brisbane.
One of the reasons I got my certificate and VHF was I thought it would alleviate the constant rubbish and pub talk on 27meg but alas I was wrong (again).
Looks like I'll have to resort to morse code for communication because I do not want to have any kids that may be on my boats listen to the gutter talk that's on every day that I have the radio on. I have to turn the radio off when kids are on-board.
Why is it that when some (I'm not saying all) blokes get on a boat they think it's Friday night at the pub??
It's not so bad during the week but when it comes to the week-ends
Finga, you're right. I dont do my boating around Brisbane. And i would imagine most of the people posting for the affirmative here would live around brisbane. It comes down to this: Bigger citys are going to have more idiots than smaller centres, if only by ratio. Now, it seems fair to say that you are going to have more tossers buggering things up for you as the VHF system has the same frequencys there as it does here. More sets, more idiots. Maybe down that way you have a greater need for regulation, but up here it seems ok. Could be the water you drink? who knows?
i suppose one of the reasons i have a licence is the extra security of DSC.
if in trouble a push of a button & someone knows i you are in trouble & if connected to the GPS they know exactly where you are in trouble.
i dont have a license as yet, only had my VHF about 6mths, and working away dont make it easy, but i would like to get one sometime soon
Daz
Geez some have some wierd excuses for their negativity!
Your right Kerry the licence certainly does place what VHF would be in a negative light, when it could be 70% by numbers safer (re the poll) if the radio was viewed as a potential life saver, personally have even been known to run without my VHF antanna fitted if the boogy men are rumoured to be around and sometimes anyway.

Shanoss, what do ya say mate, will give ya 20 bucks for that radio of yours?
Shanoss,I'm prepared to offer 30 bucks(but only if you throw in a licence).
At what stage does the penny drop?Surely after this many pages the "Haves" must realise that the "Have nots" don't give a rats ar$e what they think.
