PS - Just visited the lcoal marine place - and told him of my plight..and winced..

He said that if you see salt build-up like I did in the water jacket - right at the start (about 3 weeks ago), - forget it! Re reckons the donk would be too far gone - with salt cancer..

THoughts? Am I waisting my time and everyone elses?

Nah 12mm is the same size as a garden hose should be enough.

Mate your not waisting your time yet, sure you might be, if it's eaten out and gone porous. But it's only salt build up at this stage I hope.

THanks GUTS for your re-assurance. I am suspecting it is big salt build-up but not cancerous...

Here is the latest -
- New head gaskets on order (ETA AM tomorrow (THursday)
- Checked for head warpage x 2 - none
- Picked, prodded, jerked, scrapped, any channels I could see deep down into the outside cylinder walls with wire - made some difference I think..
- No observaitons of cancerous porosity eataway..yet

Will re-install heads without stats and modified poppets - tomorrow
- Then, take boat for a spin/test run.
- Then, report back here for findings....

Wayne can't think of a down side re: the holes but obviously there not suposed to be there. But then again why are poppets there, to bi pass the thermostat in case it fails. So my Figuring is a slightly open poppet or a few small hole in it, just in case the poppet fails seems pretty good insurance.

Mind you there easily plugged back up again, if you want, and will probably block up with salt within a year anyway.

Something to be wary off there.

ANyway, GUTS and FNQ - I thought of somehting esle..

You know the bottom leg has a pipe hollow that supposed to marry up to main plastic pipe up the leg..

What if these did not marry up together when bottom leg bolted up? How do you ensure they are married up when you can't see them join up...?

Obviuosly, if these were not joined fully, not very much water woudl be captured to do it's bit in the head, etc..

i kmow that one smelly basic is running your motor cold wears it out quicker a lot of outboard wreckers who sell recon; motors dont put a thermostat in to reduce the chance of motors betting cooked while under there warrenty i never had one in my 70hp johno i bought it 2nd hand and had it 5 yrs before i killed it cheers

mate all the franchise dealers and top mechs will tell you you should have one [as they deal with newer motors] but those who play with older motors wreckers home guys etc will tell you its not worth the risk of cooking your motor to have a thermostat in i think this is my first motor ive had with a thermostat in [that i can recall] i guess a new motor you want to protect its long life a old motor how long is its lifespan next to the risk of a $3000 rebuild and now of cause we have been shown a new trick of drilling through the white plastic things which could well be the perfect solution my old johno never got warm let alone hot plus these are tough motors new motors couldnt take the abuse these were built to handle
