Can u refer to the photos supplied?

WHich vanes are top?

What is your definition of "facing up"?

Still not sure where to drill these holes...


Would wet goo on the facing flange of these poppets stop opening?

Yout thoughts on the observations made in previous post?

Smelly put one 3mm hole right up against the Vee, and the next hole same position but next Vee. Picture 3.

Then when you re install have the holes facing up so any air can escape, it will only make a few mm differance so doesn't really matter.

Wet goo might stop the poppetts from moving, but I dought they had a chance to move as high water pressure from your water pump has to make them move. And you need high rev's for that so can't see that happening while the engine is idling or running 2000 rpm. That be why the small holes, just to get water in the jackets to start the cooling process.

SHould the next hole be diagonally opposite and not the next Vee?

Are u confident this will help alleviate my overheating probelem?

And, your thoughts on the fact that only a small portion of the cylinder head was wet and the rest of head dry after this morning's outing?

PIC3 shows four(4) vanes. This face hugs into springs.

Just to confirm - do the holes go right through so I can see daylight?

Mate these holes will help with cooling with out a dought.
But they may over cool, that's why not too big.. Yep must see day light through the holes. Seeing as the holes are near the middle it wouldn't make much differace if it's the next V' or opposite.

I can't imagine a small part of the head wet, it would either be all wet or completely dry which I think yours is otherwise it wouldn't over temp so quick.

Why woudl I see then the bottom portion of the head wet only?

ANd, are there any other mods I could make to the STAT Assy/grommets or anything else - before I re-install?

Smelly drilling holes is one of the fix's but not sure about your engine, read back a while to where I spoke of air pockets in these engines and the thermo's poping after second restart sometime after overheating.

But first (now, unless they were secondhand anyway?) you need new head gaskets then reasemble, run without thermostats as per my early morning reply/s which takes it all into account or you will be going backwards again. Your popets are designed to work at speed/RPMs you have not seen yet.

FNQ - How do I measure how warped the heads are?

If I drive fast for short period of time to clear gunk out and blow the engine up - what woudl happen to me whilst on boat?

What woudl I see? Woudl I be placing myself in danger if the donk blew up on water?

Help prove 3 things, yes/no internal blockage, yes/no stat induced airlock, , yes/no waterpump and head toward possible/unknown blown headgasket.

Once here it's almost nailed.

Smelly you are past those points now, they may need to be revisited but first a logical progression through the symptoms is needed, leapfrogging can find the cause or a partial cause with luck but can turn around and bite a person just down the track.

You need a known flat surface to place the heads on then use a feeler guage to side under to guage any gaps, if these gaps are too large you will be leaking into the wind finding a permanent fix, if all OK new head gaskets then run without thermo's checking heads with hands at idle, shut down before alarm, if no alarm - high speed test it as per my reply's in the past.

Beatifull Smelly. hope that helps it should but might need fine tuning on hole size.
