    Hi Guts
What about taking the stats and popet valves right out and try running with out them
    cheers

    Re: Cooling System Warning Alarm

Blaze I don't think it would make any differance, if you took either the poppets out then the water will flow straight past the thermostats any way.

But I would either take out the poppets first and see what happens with the temp, then find a way to make a little water flow past them just to get some water around the jackets.

Think a mod is definately in order here.

Hi Wayne, probably OK as a quick test but consider replacing the head gasket for new - sort of soon, the damage re-used ones can do to an engine if not caught very fast ends in a full teardown, simply not worth it.
Bugger outboard parts having such a large markup above their true value here.
I am battling the cost of replacement bits ATM genuine Yam parts are on average 300% more expensive than if I was a US citizen!

    Get much sand out?

    cheers fnq

Thank you all for your continued support.

I've gotta keep a cool head right now and not go down the 'throwing spanner at dog' syndrom.

FIrstly, that water temp gismo on EBAY looks cool and I may get it.

I will remove thermostat assy again and possibly drill some holes in it.

What are the consequences of not having the poppet valves inside this assy for the test?

What is the role of the poppets anyway?

Head/water jacket gaskets are new - as are stats.

Coudl the whole engine be stuffed in any case?

How much woudl new heads cost (about)? Why woudl new heads make a difference if the old ones have been cleaned?

PS - I have actually put on muscle after removing/re-inserting the bottom leg around 10 times over last few days...

    Re: Cooling System Warning Alarm

Hi smelly, mate the poppets only open up when the thermostat is not up to temp, and your high reving, so the poppetts open under high water pressure, to cool things down before the thermostat opens.

But I would remove them first try it out for 20 mins or so then do some fishing use your boat mate have a good day out on it.
Run the boat back and if all is good, put the poppets back with a small hole in each or file some grooves around the edges.

It's not good to run your boat cold, but there will be some temp in there, so to do it for a while should do no real harm.
Put it this way better than over temp.

But question when you warmed the boat up and run it for a few metres what rev's. If there to low it won't cool, the motor much due to low water pressure.

But all the same when set up corectly it should idle all day with out the over temp alarm going on.

    Re: Cooling System Warning Alarm

wayneoro, Mate I would say start off with 4 or 5 mm holes and see what happens. Bear in mind that won't be much volume, so will take a bloody long time to fill the block without the thermostats, But then again you don't really want these holes to take over the cooling either.

    Re: Cooling System Warning Alarm

OK guys - the stat assy is out.

    SOme observations -

    1) Water found in water jacket on a head that I had to take off to get to the stat assy.
    2) A little break (abou7mm) in head gasket.
    3) Bottom bit of head (about 15% of total head area) behind cylinder walls stained with new water while remaining area dry.
    4) Wet gasket goo on each bottom face (flange where it rests on grommet) of the poppet.
    5) Water/salt stain inside brand new water hoses leading to both heads.
    6) Re-confirm hot water test with new stats - which open.

Obs 3 is significant to me becuase it may be telling us that not enough water is reaching entire head(s).
    Your thoughts on this one..?

Remember, I only took boat out about 5 hours ago...

Will post a pici of the poppet FYI next and await exact advise on where to drill these holes..

    THanks

    Re: Cooling System Warning Alarm

Smelly, I would go for two 3mm holes towards the center of say the top two vanes, on each poppet. Have them facing up holes at the top may help with getting the air out of the system and some water flow.

So if you added all the holes together you would have a 12mm hole that should be plenty.
