Good point Seabug.
Pretty sure breather was open. HOw do I check this for under-floor fuel tanks?

Hi Smelly,
Sorry,I only use portable tanks, and yes I have left them closed.

good on ya smelly i thought id fixed the overheating prob on my 90hp 89 johno caused when i made some new canals through a bunch sand banks cleaned out the thermo bizo ran on hose great loaded the boat up headed out warning siren pops on home pull it apart full of sand again where is this coming from didnt hit any sand banks
Wayneoro, wheres your thermostat, at the top.
If so turn your air compresor in to a bubbler.
Fill your engine through the top thermostat, then plug in the air compresor down the bottom, give it a squirt, sure you will get wet but it will lift the sand and sediment after a couple of goes.
A marriage licence should be like your fishing licence!
Expires every year and you get a 3 day pass when you go interstate.
Wayne that sucks, like gut's says you need some way to disturb and flush the residue without constant pulling down as it slowly clears, anything you can devise will help.
You could also consider running without thermo and at high speed (warm it up a bit first) to flush as much as possible away. No way of telling if it will be enough though and a competent eye needs to be kept on temperature as a horn at high speed is potentially more damaging than one at low speed.
Short of somehow finding a roundabout cure, a pull down and manual clean out is in order.
Last time you bulldog through a sand bank I bet!
cheers fnq
thanks guys where is the residue of sandy gravel ? telltale pumps good water luke warm its around the plugs that gets hot the thermo is at bottom of motor my 70hp 1981 never had a thermostat in it and i have never heard of a recond; motor by a dealer having one was told its not worth the risk ? pull down what parts mate
Hi Wayne, bad news I suspect, did you push through the sandbank? cause if you did the engine probably pumped a kilo of sand all the way up into the powerhead where the flow of water sudently reduces it settles out packs and really cannot be removed by any process but a manual removal.
If you are sure about the pump pumping enough and there is not thermo to complicate matters and it is still overheating and it did not before the sandbank??? need to pull the head off and scrape/suck/coax the sande away for a coupl of hours. Be thankfull it's not a 4 stroke!!
Adding a thermo is a good idea, not for slowing the flow etc but to make sure the cylinder reaches it's designed expansion specwhen operating so that when the piston does expand as it's supposed to, they have the designed warm tollerance with each other. Without this ability the piston will run overexpanded within the cylinder, the rings suffer as well combustion being sootier than it should be also creates more problems.
cheers fnq
yes i did plough through a bunch of sand banks the thermostats are still in can i remove the plates that have the plugs on them and get the sand
No probably not, the sand will have settled around the cylinders in those water gallerys as well as the head, you will need to take it to where the piston crowns are staring you in the face.
But it all depends if everything else is in spec, the best idea is probably to manual clean but it may be possible to get away with less, really hard to tell from my computer.
cheers fnq
thanks mate took front plates off [with plugs ] little bit of salt and sand but not much but under the gasket on front cover all the water ways there were chocker with salt need gaskets so wont be going anywhere fast there is no outlet for water in the chamber except back into thermostat ? cheers might have to fly smelly in ps there is another cover behind what ive just taken off will rip that off and have a bo peep
Hi Wayne, I have been doing some research into what cleans away the salt like buildup but will not harm aluminium, seems plain old vinegar is a slow but useable solution. Consider soaking some bit's in it for a couple of days?
cheers fnq
Welcome to our nightmare Wayne!!!
I will take this oppourtunity to pass the salty baton onto you....
As you said before, this journey has many twists/turns/humor, etc..
Maybe you should also inpsect your water pump impellor seeing as though you have evidence of stubborn sand/salt ingress.
I am still learning but if there is anything I can help you with - just post..
Good luck!

thanks guys rang about getting some gaskets dealer told me to drop my leg [though rusty leg overs i have some idea ] but droping the leg on a o/b ? anyway he said to then backwash it might save me having to lift block off how hard is that guys i know the bottom bit is easy its the shaft under the carbs that you undo and get it back that sounds scary
