    Somerset 10/10

Met a bloke in the pub last night who was going to somerset for a fish this morning and offered to go as a decky, he was keen, even though I didn't offer any local knowlege as I've never fished the dam before. So, we met at the pub at 5.30am and headed up to the dam. The wind was already blowing when we got there, not a good sign, but we put the boat in and headed over to the other side thinking we might find some shelter from the wind, not likely, the wind seems to swirl around in there and it's really hard to get away from it. Anyway, we found a nice steep bank and started drifting along it, casting hard bodies at the bank, which produces nothing, not even a touch. I tried a spinner bait while Greg tried a popper, nothing.
I've wanted to get a bass on plastics for ages, so I grabbed my gulp collection, hmm, all big stuff, oh well I thought, I'll give one of these silly looking 4" minnows in rainbow a go, never caught a thing on them yet, but who knows right?
Cast out behind us about 20m, let it drop to the bottom, the 1/8 jighead touched bottom and just dragged along with the ocasional twitch, and I felt a light tap, rock? snag? nah, tap tap. It felt like a whiting (yeah, I know, fresh water) quick twitch, tap tap, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. "YES" Up came a lovely bass about 43cms. I was stoked to say the least. My first bass on a plastic!
A bit more drifting, and no more fish, change of spot, the drift angle was hard to get right with the wind which seemed to keep changing directions all the time. We were both getting hungry, so we stopped out in the middle of the dam and threw out a SP each, popped our rods in the holders and proceded to nosh down. Half way through my sanga Greg starts choking on his sandwich and points at my rod which is bending over nicely! Stuff the sandwich, quickly discarded it on the seat and grabbed the rod, whooohoooo another bass around the same size, quick kiss and back he went.
We spent a while more drifting around, trying to find a spot that would allow a nice slow drift, but the wind made it pretty hard. I got one more bass for the day, again around the low 40s I reckon, didn't want to keep him out of the water too long.
All up I had a great time on the water, especially rubbing it in to Greg who didn't land a fish the poor bugga. Oh well, I'll be up there in the kayak REAL soon.

    Does it get any better?
Fishing and making new fishing buddies!!
Don't rub it in to much, he won't take you again. That is what the captain threatens me with.
    Cheers Kim.

Haha, nah, it's cool Kim, he lives down near Byron, so probly not much chance of fishing with him again anyway.
I'm sure Roo gives as good as he gets too mate.

    Canodle,

The same bite is being experienced at Maroon and Moogerah,
The bass are toying with the SP's before deciding to engulf, I've found in this case that scent keeps them interested, I have had fish tap at my SP 6 -7 times before loading up.

    Interesting Stuff

    Cheers Chris

    Well done Canoedle,

I too wouldn't mind taking my kayak up that way to get among those Bass. And good to see you broke your SP virginity on bass.
