First Barra a Hi Flyer at Awoonga.

    Hi All

With my job I dont have much time to get out and have a fish for more than a day. I tried to head up to the dams last year to get my first Barra but after plenty of dramas with staff had to cancel the trip . I had written off the flight but was since informed that I had a credit and it had to be used by the 9th of november. I had the oppurtunity to head out on the water with Johnny Mitchell the local guide and after many long conversations on the phone I finally shook hands with him at gladstone airport. I only had one day to fish and had to be back at work again on the tuesday. So he was under no pressure to produce a fish . THe fact that it was blowing a solid 25 knots from the SE also didnt help as this is supposed to be the poison wind. Well after Monday I recon someone should tell the Barra that. Johnny's knowledge of the fish and the dam is truly amazing and he managed to produce the goods and not only get me my first Barra but we eventually put 8 fish in the boat with 6 over the metre mark and drop almost as many . Iwas absolutely blown away. It took a few dropped fish for me to work out the do's and dont's. But once we had the pattern worked out as to what would stimulate the fish into biting we never looked back. It was very hard to keep contact with the lure with the roaring SE but Johny kept altering spots and boat positioning to help us to overcome the adverse conditons. I cant praise his efforts enough and thank him for an excellent day on the water. Truly one of my best days chucking lures around. We caught all the fish casting the weed edges(not that there is a shortage of them in the dam) and working the lures back to the boat. The fish were from 87cm to 115cm. I cant wait to get back out here again and have another bash at them.

    Good fishing to you all
