the highs and lows at awoonga

had the chance to fish this great fishery on the weekend in the bassin qld comp,i have never fished this dam and on arriving the prospect of finding fish lessoned on seeing how big this water was looking out over the dam was awsome and got the nerves going.we started early on friday morning with some advise from the locals we headed to some weed beds and started casting ,five hours later arms aching no fish no bumps and a bit dissapointed, second session stared early saturday i headed down towards dingo island and found some nice edges to try, landed my first awoonga barra 810mm and in stunning condition, this was the only fish i got in five hours but was happy.third session started and was going into the night so was keen to head down to the same spot, wind blowing 20knots and uncomfortable but stuck at it then whack hooked up for five seconds then gooone, bit further on another hit and my little wife was on ,on for five minutes one good jump a fish of about 900mm gets airborn and spits the slickrig, number two gooone. drifted a bit further wife on again then gooone i cast then all hell cuts loose ,i get hit by a big fish the first run was at least fifty metres and fast straight out into the dam fifteen minutes of fighting and not even seeing this fish when finally she comes up beside the boat 25.5kg of silver beauty,on landing her and finding out this to be my pb by 20mm at 1090 and 8kg heavier we got some wonderful pics of it from all angles and the final one of her in the water as she swam off ,thats when the dissapointment started ,my beautiful wife had helped me lower the fish back in then picked the camera back up it slipped from her grasp and straight over the side into 60ft of water.the last we saw of it was a small glow dissapearing into the depths.the high of the fight and the low of the lost camera was strange.a few minutes to sit back and think and assess what happened still didnt help but as we think now we have a great memory of this fish and there is heaps more this size to catch.i will be back to try again and very keen to break that mark.cheers AL ps no pics as you can see

Great to see you and your wife out fishing Warrior.

A great fish it would have looked fantastic. We had a similar thing happen way up the back of Awoonga - brand new batteries ran out - yep new ones.

Luckily we took them out and put them back in several times to get one lucky shot of our first metre barra geesee as we had to release the fish alive etc then the nice lady at Dick Smiths in Gladstone put us on to NIMH batteries - they take 100 times more pics than normal ones and are rechargable.

Well done on getting fish on your first trip as most don't at Awoonga.

All the best with photo's on future trips - you will have even bigger fish on the boat by then as then as they would have had more time to fatten up ha.

    Top effort mate, well done!

I lost or damaged alot of expensive cameras in my time and my wife couldn't trust me for years and gave me those disposable cameras to use. I am now back in the circle of trust and have one of those water resistant cameras in my boat, you know the ones from the add when they are in the elements.

Will see how long it lasts this time lol

Yep, got one on sunday morning after the presentation. 74cm. First and biggest barra for me to date, but will get a bigger one though. Great net work by Gunna. Have to thank Trevor again for taking Gunna and myself on Sunday evening. He put Peter onto a 90cm Barra. Nice fish too. Gave him a little curry. Then later on in the evening I landed one abot 60cm. I know the one's that you loose don't count but it looked bigger that the one I landed earlier in the day. Thanks again Trevor. Had a ball and learnt a lot in those couple of hours. And thanks to Gunna for coming up. Had a ball even though we were fishless for 3 days. And catties don't count Peter. lol

Al, any other time loosing the camera would have hurt but when you need that memory card to register the catch in the comp it would have hurt that little bit more. You didn't mention about leaving the sounders and GPS at home though. Getting forgetful in your old age hey?
Will have to catch up for a drink before xmas.
