Headed to Lenthals on the 2nd to spend a few days. Headed up with a couple of mates Glen and Steve (Agent Orange). Left home at 3 and arrived about 6.30. Set up camp and put the boat in. We fished for about 4 hrs while sussing out the dam pulled about 10 bass up to 45. Back to camp for a feed, few beers and an afternoon siesta. Went back out for the afternoon session to throw some surface lures on dark. Turned out to be one of the best sessions ive had for a while with 11 Bass, 4 barra hooked and only 1 boated. This was my first Barra and i was pretty stoked to get him off the surface. We got 2 barra to the net before they managed to throw the hooks and Glen busted 1 off as he was heading for a few trees and applied a little too much pressure.
The first night was where i also got the ######## of the trip award. I was standing on the bow of the boat and driving the electric and casting from there when we decided to move to the other side. I turned to the boys and said how good is this standing up on the bow. About 3 seconds after i said it with the leccy only on about 1/3 speed, it hit a submerged log and i ended up having an unwanted swim. There are soo many submerged logs in this dam that you are frigging crazy if you do over the 4kt speed limit.
2nd day we woke at 4 for an early morning surface session but it was raining. Along with the rain came a cold snap which slowed down the fishing over the next 2 days. We didnt fish as hard, having a bit of a sleep in and fishing from 7-10am in the mornings and about 3-7 at night. We got about 12 bass each day and hooked a few barra but had no success landing them. After the cold weather came through only the casts put right on the money would yield strikes. Best lures were XPS slim dog pencil poppers, Ecogear pencil poppers, White skirted spinnerbaits, 80-100mm Squidge fish and jackals.
Highlights of the trip were the fish on the surface. We ended up with about 45 Bass and the Barra beat us 9-1 over the 3 days of fishing. Lenthals is a beautiful place and the fish are just a bonus there. We will be going back again and we have a bit of knoweldge about the dam and techniques to use so hopefully next time get some warmer weather and get into a few more barra
