Gents,

fished up at samsonvale on monday morning with a mate at a bank we found just south of the sailing club saw two other blokes fishing the opposite bank under the powerlines. Barometer was low (1008) and a north west wind kicked in around 7. We checked out another bank that looked ok first but it turned out to be shallow so we didnt get to our usual haunt till about 545.

third cast i got a fish on a mask vib as it came up the dropoff, didnt have a tape measure but i can tell you it was 40 wraps from the first guide (later measured at about 53cm fork) the fish werent smashing anythhing and for the next half hour got a few smaller fish until my mate got another big fish on a slider. We moved out around to the point and were fishing a shallow ledge that dropped down a bit deeper about 15 metres out. the sliders were the most productive lure when the sun was a bit higher. The fish were just tapping most of the time and the 5 big fish we got here (me 1, mate (madam Campbell 4) were all very timid on the strike and took a while to get going.

the sliders were cast out over the ledge left to sink and then reeled slowly in getting tapped almost every cast. the jackall couldnt get a touch here and i swapped over to a slider. I was using a heavier head and didnt get as many fish (probably a 3/8 as opposed to my mates 1/4 oz head).

the fish were pretty timid but were definately there in good numbers with a bigger proportion of big fish amongst them. we pulled stumps about 8 with the fish still biting. This spot has consistently produced fish and is a easy walk. I am looking at a few other spots but the grass may not always be greener.

pardon my ignorance but I have not been keeping up with this Dam but with all the 50 cm + fish getting caught i just need to know , I guess there is a restriction of watercraft on this dam hence all the bank walking if not whats the deal with boats

spot on flyfisho, no boats at north pine dam. they give out a certain number of permits however i dont think there even doing that at the moment, guessing it is due to the water level being so low.

P.F.R.M.A. select from applicants,And issue only 300 permits a year at $100 a pop.(There are strict rules that also apply)

Eg :- On and off the water times,Electric only,And a cut off point (Northern arm only) is allowed to be fished.There is a list of em.But all fair.

The permit scheme was holted due to the ramp that was used for launching is now high and dry,And it is deemed unsafe.The scheme will be returned,If the water ever does.

For now Lake Samsonvale is a NO BOATING LAKE

Hardb8: Does that mean fish stocking is on hold for the moment until water levels rise and boats are allowed on?

Because I have seen many 'forgeiners' if you will, keeping more than their bag limits (2) on Bass, letting go small Tilapia and keeping undersized Silver Perch (25cm or under). Not sure on the bag limits of Silver Perch? But they sure had half a bucket load of undersized ones and well over 4 Bass, a Silver Perch and a Tilapia in a keeper net to keep alive and fresh.

Also they usually have about 10-14 rods out between 1 or 2 people. I have heard you are only aloud one rod per person with a single hook rig? Is that correct? .

I was talking to one and he still had fish in his freezer from the last few times he had been fishing at North Pine. So what is the need to keep another 20+ fish.

I'm only 16 and I'm slowly building up courage to tell wrong doers the rules and to learn them before they fish. Also to only keep what they need and to let the good Bass go since they can't breed. One guy said he had a 76cm Bass from last time he fished North Pine. I don't know whether I should beleive that comment but it sure pissed me off.

Hi Troy/Mako,
I have heard that a few anglers are continuing to pay their $100 annual fees to maintain the stocking of this lake,Even though they are not allowed to fish from boats.To me these people are true supporters,And are to be commended for their passoin to a great fishery.I was not contacted with regards to this matter,But I think I'll go out of my way to find out more.

These are not rumours,As some of the Bass I've recently caught are indeed yearlings .Which can only be the result of very recent stockings.

I am also aware of the type of people that you speak of with regards to keeping many fish.I have seen it on a couple of occassions,Usually in the stretch between Forgan Cove and Bullocky Rest.It makes ya sick to ya stomach.Unfortunantly we lack the numbers needed in Fisheries officers,And it seems an almost impossible task to enforce everywhere.

I personally am not aware of bag limits of certain species.Therefore cannot comment.The reason being I can't kill a Bass.Respect em to much,So I've never needed to even look this information up.

Same goes with the amount of hooks/rigs fished.As a youngster I learned that only one outfit at a time can be fished to it's true potential.Therefore I only ever have one rod with me.This may be dissputed by others.But these are my thoughts,Learned from my experiences.

I think it's great to see youngins like yaself passionate about our fisheries.But the last thing you want,Is to end up in a knife fight on the bank,LOL.

If anything,Study the rules.Make sure you KNOW them,And then mention it to others if you think it's valid.You must also understand that N.P. is a put and take fishery,And that not everyone parctices C&R.Some of these people are known to pull the (I no speak English) But I'm sure if you mention you are about to call fisheries,Pull ya phone and make a dummy call, (Or real) ,They will suddenly understand the language.

Upon writing this response you've made me see that I need to seek this info for myself.......As it is a resource that really needs protection.....

Good on ya m8.We need more youngsters like ya.Just don't get yaself into any trouble.

Maybe Ausfish should have a dedicated/permanante column for the rules and bag limits for our fisheries.Both a Fresh and Salt section,Which could be updated as neccessary?

I hope this happens,As an educated generation will only lead to a brighter future.I'm sure it would be visited quite regularly.

Hardb8: Thanks for the detailed reply. I too have seen most of them between Forgan's Cove and Bullocky's Rest. Maybe they are the same offenders? I only every say anything if they are doing something I know is wrong. Everything seems to be fine when I tell them. I don't go bezerk or anything like that, just simply inform them. The adults usually let all the kids do the talking. They are a bit anti-social for some reason .

Cammy: Every bait fisho I have seen is usually doing too damn well! Just make sure your not like one of the ones mentioned! .

yer dont worry bout that, i am strict with my sizes and the law, i only take fish that are at least 5 or 10cm over the legal size, and i adbide by the law. and i am only 16.

Cammy: Remember don't take the bigger models as they are the sports fish of the future. I have heard Tilapia and Bass are probably the best eating fish from the Freshwater. Though I wouldn't know I've never tried a Freshwater fish. I have also heard that Freshwater fish taste like mud pie. I guess it all depends on where you live (Inland around Dams or on the Coast) and what you're used to eating, Fresh or Salt.
