    Somerset 12.1.07.

We have been fishing Somerset a bit over the last few weeks and have been only lucky enough to release quite a few smallish bass < 30cm. I had put this down to getting on the water a little late and fishing too much when the sun is high. So yesterday we decided to be on the water as early as we could and left home around 4.30am and on the water by 5.30am. Coming into Kilcoy we were greeted by soup like fog and it was pretty obvious that the dam would be covered in the same way.

On the water and followed the GPS track to an area that we often start off with a quick troll. Lures in the water and within 2 minutes the rod on the right was doubled over with some drag running. Initially it was "not another snag" but a few head-shakes later and some good runs there was some silver at the side of the boat. A nice size bass around 45cm was in the well for a while and over the side a bit later. The early start seemed to be the trick.

Once the fog lifted we headed down towards the spit area and sounded out some likely spots and found fish underneath that were reluctant to take any lures, we tried spinner-baits, jackals, jackal replicas, soft plastics and hard bodies and moved on fish less.

A decision was made to keep trolling with some deep running hard bodies to cover some ground and also to get some air movement over the carpet as it was now mid morning #and getting rather on the hot side. We managed to troll up another 4 bass between 30 and 35cm's and a medium size Yellow belly.

A swim, a bit more trolling and then back to Kirkleigh for the return home just after 1.30pm.

As much as we were on the water early I believe that earlier still would be the go at the moment. Still a great day and very happy with the larger bass than those recently caught.

Great report & pic Cameron, gotta love those foggy mornings. I've had some of my best days fishing when they start like that!

Nice bass. I am heading up there on the 4th Feb and hope to get onto some.

Although I hope there isn't too much fog on the day, I am only on a kayak and wouldn't want to get run over by a boat. What time did the fog lift?

The fog hung around the Kirkleigh end till about 6.30 though the spit area must have lifted a lot earlier as it was very clear when we moved towards that end.

Having said this I think that yesterday was a bit of a one off with the fog at this time of year.

Visibility was next to nothing yesterday and we wouldn't have moved without having the GPS. More dangerous was the people around Kilcoy driving on the roads in the middle of the fog without headlights.
