After my first year as a boat owner, I finally bought a GPS and tried it out on the weekend in the Bay. (I have not had the confidence to go too far afield before.)
I now know that all of those boats that I saw were at the Harry Atkinson artificial reef.
I saw lots of people with their rods bent over hard but I only ever saw them pull in small fish. Nevertheless, it looks like a great place to try.
So I came home and have searched far and wide for info on the Harry Atkinson reef and I am sad to report that there is not much that a search engine will bring up. A few postings exist on this website including one from Webby that suggest that there is not much on the reef left now.
So what can you tell me please?...
1. What makes up the reef? car bodies, boats? I was there at the top of the tide and there was about 19 m of water there.
Mate ive only fished it a few times and the fishing is better at night and 100m or so to the north and try the slacker stages of the tide as it really gets a go on through there. On whats left of the reef you can get lots of undersize squire, parrot, sweetlip, morwrong, bream etc. Despite all of this it can be supprisingly good at times with all species caught incl. big cod
Harry Atkinson reef was put there many years ago by the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club.It consists mostly of car tyres and shopping trolleys but these have been scattered over the years and covered in sand.
The scattering, as pointed out by Sandbar, is probably why the biggest and best snapper and the like are often caught quite a long way off the main body of reef bulk.
So don't be afraid to have a hunt around in water quite a way off the main body of the reef. You're looking for bits and pieces of isolated ground a metre or so high.
