catching mackeral!!
hi all,
i am thinking of going out near an island surrounded by deep water.
I was wondering how best to catch the good size doggie mackerel
eg lure techniques and baits to use
thanks Sean.

Doggies of good size are down deep mostly so get your rig down there, 50-80 gram slugs retrieved erratically will get them.

Re: catching mackeral!!
Hi,
A method is to drop metal slices like, Bumper Bars or Riaders down to the bottom then start a high speed erratic retreive. Faster the better.
or cast the metal slices away from the boat and start a high speed erratic retreive.
Another method is to troll a deep lure like a Halco Crazy, DK Lure ScaleRaza or one of my favourites a storm Big Mac.
You can also troll a range of Bibbless lures or rigged trolling baits like wolf herring.
I find that it is important to have the drag set soft and the drag to be very smooth. I use a Penn 8500 on a Gary Howard 8Kg stick for Mackerel fishing.
The fish will normally take a good run then come in reasonably easy. If you happen to hook a spaniard it may take 2 or 3 good runs before tiring.

Re: catching mackeral!!
pillies on a gang of 3 5/0 30cm wire trace put it out in the run. if there is not much run use a float and the higher the sun the lower the mackeral mostly anyway
