HI folks,
I am just wondering wha sort of techniques, bait, tackle and lures i should use for chasing barracouda. You see recently my mate and i discovered a jetty that just had hordes of them underneath, when we found out we were actually fishing for trevally and queenfish and we were trying to avoid them, but now i have realised that we may as well give them a go as i heard they put up an alright fight. One of the main things i need to know is trace, rod/reel,line and what is stated above.
I think a wire trace is a must and big strong hooks in the 6/0 range are nececity depending on size. Baits can be any flesh or live bait that flashes in the sun.
Lures can be anything but metal slugs are definately the best.
Coudas love fingers. If you've got one hanging around, target something smaller like a 5lb fingermark, pull it to the boat/pier then wait until it takes a bite, usually taking a piece of your finger!
These things are a pest and they're well armed so be careful.
Use anything that is gold with a real bright flash, like a gold bomber or a gold rattlin' spot. Jerk these lures through the water with the most erratic action that you can possible do.
A good sized couda is great fun on a light line, however like whiteman says, look out for their teeth.
for a hook i'd be usin a mustad long shank or big red probly . you need the thicker hoooks or else they can be bent apparently. Any flashy lure such as a halco or raider would do fine. Any silver coloured fish would work well id reckon.
