Hi James,
I haven't got GPS marks for Mermaid, but the artificial reef at Narrowneck is on the beach at Main Beach. As you drive along the Esplanade north of Surfers you get to the big Main Beach sign. Look Just south of east and you will see a couple of yellow buoys about 200 odd metres offshore. They mark the sandbags of the reef.
I have heard a few reports that the sandbags are not standing up to the conditions as well as they were expecting.(and some reports blame rec fishers gear for contributing to damage to the bags ???) I do believe however there is a proposal to put more sandbags in there. Generally speaking the beaches are in great condition and the reef has never been tested for one of its main purposes - protecting the beach from big storm swells. But I for one feel it has contributed in a positive way to the northern beaches. I think that a bit of maintence to the reef would be a good idea.
Cheers
Steve.
A starting piont for Mermaid Reef is
28.02.440 153.27.070.
The arti off narrowneck is about 2k's south of the Scottish Prince Wreck.( that is 27.57.758 153 25 999 ).This mark is in AGD , but there are shark nets very close to the wreck, you can't miss it ./
That wreck is about 2 k's south of the seaway.
The arti is 2 - 3 hundred meters offshore and is marked by a orange bouy at either end of the sandbags. The wave rider is located within 50 meters of the reef to the east. There is no anchoring within the reef area due to damage to the sandbags.
Take bait jigs ( see fishing reports posts ). Fish to be caught are Tailor and Bream, tarwhine, and Spottie Mackerel at times. Winter may hold different fish ?
Hope this helps...........
