Will be heading over to N straddie on sunday for a few days of R&R and was just wandering what has the fishing been like over there lately if anybody knows. I will probably fish Pt Lookout area around the gorge at my favourite spots for bream, tailor, dart, whiting, trevally and other bits and pieces that turn up. I will also go to the Amity point jetty and try again for some macks or tuna (hopefully) ???
I was also wandering if there has been any reef fish/pelagics caught off the more exposed parts of Pt Lookout? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
i'e just come back from 2 weeks over there so here goes.
Amity jetty is choc-a-bloc with hardiheads at present - take a cast net & you will have no need to buy bait. Tunas are chasing them at all times of day with the odd mack coming thru as well - you just have to be "johnny on the spot" when they put in a visit. Take some rid - the sandflies are thick around the jetty if there isn't a decent breeze.
Usual suspects dart & whiting on Flinders, yabbies for dart worms for whiting. Fishing best when a blow is on from the southeast. Tailor on Main particulary at the pin end.
The water around Dune rocks (the outcrop between deadmans & frenchmans) is excellent at the moment. There is very little sand in behind the bombies & the boulders are exposed. When it is like this it fishes really well for squire, speckled hind & bream & the odd yellowtail king when they cruise thru. Fish off the High rock in this area for dart early morning or with a livie under a float at night for tailor / jew. See Nuggets article in March's Bush 'n Beach - it doesn't talk about straddie but the technique of livebaiting under a float in this area is the same.
I didn't go out on the Point to comment but it really doesn't change too much - it always fishes well. The chance of a pelagic from the rocks is pretty good considering the quality season they've had just offshore.
A Sad Note - the fish & chip shop on the Point has been torn down & a "marvellous" 3 story development up in its place. I just about cried. The graffitti that can still be read thru the builders coverup paint says it all.
