how long do you stay in one spot if you dont get any whiting and when you move to another bank and when you move do you go with the tide or against
how long do you stay in one spot if you dont get any whiting and when you move to another bank and when you move do you go with the tide or against
If there was a defining answer to the question, no one would have any trouble catching fish.
I'll let you in on the Broadwater experience.
Find the bank you want to fish, anchor and fish with the tide. No fish in 10 -15 minutes, either let some rope out ( 10 meters ) or move around.
Whiting up the Nerang in particular, move through the area in spurts. So a bite may last for 15 minutes to 1 hour and then nothing for an hour or so.
Whiting love South easter, theory says they will be caught on the up tide over sand banks, blood worm is King bait. Light line, long flexible rods, minimal sinker, long trace/ leader and small ( No 4 or 6 ) short shank hook. YES I know folk will tell ya that the long shank is the go, but ask any club fisho ( gun fisho ) what they use. Using the short shank allows the whiting to hook themselves.

gotta agree with phil on the short shank i never use anything more then a 4, and found with the sand pumping jetty anything up to a 15 knot se will get u a good bag full over that or from another direction you are wasting ya time usually. And at times you need to move along the jetty with the bite but not too often. On the jetty beach worms are the go. Sometimes preserved work better then fresh, never have figured that one out.
cheers.
whats the biggest whiting anyone has caught??
was at the canals off the maroochy river ANZAC weekend and caught a 38cm one, put up a good fight. was using sand worms.
Is day or night better for the sand pumping jetty whiting?
750 gm for me, itching to break the kilo mark. one day I have found the pumping jetty a better proposition at night, although my mate has had the same results early morning ,between 6.30 n 7.00 am.
jaybee,
was that horse a surf whiting (on the jetty). I've never cracked over 38cm in the suds. All my 40cm+ slappers are creek fish - best 44cm, I've got no idea of the weight as I can never score em in the comps.
chris
ps best catches (numberwise) late arvo into evening on a rising tide on the flats or in the drains on a runout.
best fish (the bigguns) just after sun is completely above horizon in the morning with a high tide turning to runout at sunrise.
That was a sand pumping fish, my bro has caught them up to 1.2 down bruns up the creek in 6 inches of water on 1kilo line, mainly at night, (big yabbies on a small hook) down the jetty i just leave the rod propped up against the rail and wait for the tip to to bend tight then gently pick the rod up an reel in. It amuses me to watch people fishing holding the rod and going for the big hookup on the first bite by bringing the tip back up past their head ??? best night, 36 fish for 3.3 kg of fillets a good return when you see fillets for $33 a kilo. however the average would be 28 fish for a session, btw i don't keep em if they are under 25 cm. ( that gets some looks from some of the asians ) also i have found preserved worms better then fresh some nites, one day I keep saying this, i am going to try some yabbies off there. I now use 4kg platypus platinum down the jetty nice fine diameter, with a 11'6" cronulla, nice working tip, as i have dropped to many fish, with the line breaking winching them up to the jetty, still lose the odd one tho.
cheers
joe.
Biggest Whiting I have seen caught in recent years was 46cm. It was caught in the Logan River. I didn't catch it but a mate I had with me at the time did. Think from memory it was in the 800+ gram mark. Have a photo but no scanner. If I can get hold of one I will post it.
Cheers, Clutter
Jaybee, have used yabbies off the jetty and they go off! Bit of SW - SE stirs up the water and they come on better like you fellas have said. My best for the jetty is 37cm dunno what the weight woulda been ??? When we were down at Hastings pt in March we saw a fella and his wife pull up a fish that would have easily been 1kg it was 51cm No Bullshit!
Cheers, Lachie
sssshhhh clutter or you'll have everyone lining up for a Logan River trout. I'd much prefer them standing shoulder to shoulder with Jaybee - its expected on the jetty.
In answer to brewmans original post when I want numbers I will drift an area I know produces (with virtually no lead) until I find a patch, then quietly double anchor, burley with crushed yabbies/soldiers & fish - when I lose the school for more than 10mins I drift again. The big uns are different I get them in specific locations in holes, drains & bank edges on big running tides. I anchor up same burey, big arse sinkers, metre long traces. I will sit in the spot because they will show.
Most important thing is SILENCE & as Jaybee said not touching the rod till they run.
chris
Not any more chris the trick is to spread enuff gear so 3 or 4 of ya mates can fish comfortably and have an extra rod or two laying up against the rail with some loose line just hanging below the jetty with nothing on it. Rofmao.standing shoulder to shoulder with Jaybee - its expected on the jetty.
cheers.
thank fellas for the information it will come in handy my biggest whiting so far was 43cm at 615 grams but long way to go to get 1kg but i am trying thanks agian brewman
Can't remember the length of this one !
Weight ?
From the Nerang a few years ago.
Yeah ! right, I never get them in comp time. >

Geez Phil, they must pump some good additives into that Nerang River
