    Please help!

    Hi there,

Well, this is my first post on this site. Just looking for some advice. My boyfriend and I are fairly new to Melbourne. Neither of us have done much ocean fishin' ??? (OK, I've never been before and he's maybe been once). Our anniversary is coming up and I thought I'd surprise him with a weekend away, including a fishin' trip. Any suggestions out there? We'd like to try ocean fishing - and I'd prefer to stay someplace fairly close. We also need to keep things fairly inexpensive. Please email me at lanit9@yahoo.com if you have any recommendations (or even if you know of places NOT to go)!

    Thanx,
    Lani

Lani, not a lot of members from the southern end of the country reply on this board, try, fishnet.com.au, if you get no help. great idea for what its worth, my idea of a surprise would be a weekend not spent fishing

I would have thought Phillip Island would be an obvious choice. Good fishing for salmon at Cape Woolamai or even Kilkunda, plenty of piers and jettys around and I'd think there's plenty of charters through Westernport. Does that cover it all?
Plus you've the cute penguin show and the seals if the fishing is lousy.

Can I point out that Phillip Island does not have "shark" nets despite having seal and penguin colonies and a known population of great whites. Phillip Island is also a very popular surf spot. Maybe something we paranoid Qlders should consider before the next whale, dolphin or turtle gets netted.

    Hey Lani,

I don't know that area either - being a Maroon

But choose a top fishing spot - because fishing mixes well with other recreational activities

unfamiliar ground for me too, but...
a few years back me and four other mates used a
charter boat guy at queenscliff. he sets off in a
10?? meter kevlarcat through the heads and outside fishing
all day, everything supplied for $120 back then.

i can't recall the name of their operation, but will keep looking for
their info sheet. something cat charters, me thinks.
    larkin parade rings a bell.

going through the heads of port phillip bay seemed easier than morton bar
on an average day, but had a rip roaring current when we came back in.
still no problems for the boat, caught tusk fish/parrot, flathead and did extensive trolling with spoons for tuna. few hits on that so found a good patch
for barracoota which were heaps of fun to bring up. the larger ones having a
pretty fearsome head of teeth. someone said they don't eat too great so we
released most of 'em. still came out with a heap of parrots and something like
pearl perch. a good day out while in melbourne for me.

I recently moved out of Melbourne after 5 terrible and cold years.
Can't advise on any specific charters but Queenscliffe on the western side of port Phillip bay or as someone else said possibly phillip island. there is a town just on the mainland side of the island called San Remo?
they could be the places to look.
