Can somebody identify these fish ? A friend of a friend caught them ...
i am not 100% sure, i think the top two fish might be herrings, i might know wat the others are, where abouts were they caught?
The bigger one is a White trevally and the smaller ones I think are mackerel scad (because of the lateral line) or horse Mackerel (the bigger eye) Actually - looking at Grant's giude here - I reckon they are the Horse Mackerel, also called Cowanyoung.
The white trevally are supposedly one of the better eating trevally (I am not a fan) and Grant reckon's the Horse Mac's are a prime bait for large snapper.

Yes, I have caught all these species in the Bay and used them live for Cobia, etc.
The White Trevor does get a lot bigger and is good chewin'

what you guys are calling a white trevally, looks to me like a silver trevally, are they the same fish and just called different names in different locacations

I think everyone is right here!
The bottom one is a silver trevally. Not bad eating, but a little strong for me personally.
The top ones are (known as) yellowtail scad or yakkas (good live bait - never herd of them being eaten) and the other two are (I'm pretty sure) slimey mackeral. I've seen these for sale in Safeway smoked and cryovac sealed.
Not sure of their eating qualities though.

Hi, Slates is pretty much on the money.
The top ones are yakka followed by slimeys and of course the trevor.
They most likely picked them up around the pylons.

I've eaten them, you need fairly large ones tho by the time u fillet and take the pin bones out, not bad eating a little sweet not unlike a whitingnever herd of them being eaten

Just out of curiousity, though. And they were sweet.
Rob K caught a Yakka on the Prime Mover on Thursday night that went about 40cms. Biggest bugga I have ever seen.

I Would call them 4:
Silver trevally or Blurter,
Couple of yellowtail or yackas,
The lrg yellowtail are more dark and look like cowanyoung,
And the good old slimey mackeral.
But all you need to know is how to hook them up live!!!

Silver Trevally and White Trevally are different species although they look almost identical. There are minor differences and they are found in the same areas etc.
