Captain Nelson / Wreck near Mud Island

I heard from a friend of a wreck near mud island which has been consistently pulling good snapper, was wondering where abouts this is, only wrecks i know off around this general area are the 'Kate' and the 'Mt Elliot'
but no Cpt Wilson ? Am I on the wrong track or is this just a mythical location ? [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]
    thanks

Re: Captain Nelson / Wreck near Mud Island

Well i wont give exact co-ordinates but it is on the southern end of a bank of what i cant remember the name but it is a sandy ruble and can get pretty shallow. You will often see boats there so just look on a map and go for it

Sorry no GPS marks. A mate of mine has been trying to find this wreck for well over 18 months. He has some marks for it, but nothing that makes sence on a map.

Here is some info for you.... it sounds very FISHY!!

"Kaptjain Neilsen" - Moreton Bay - Steam Dredge Wheelhouse -
Max Depth: 13 Mtrs Average Depth: 13 Mtrs
Average Viz: 8 Mtrs Diver Rating: Open Water
    Construction: Steel Sank In: 1964
On September 18, 1964 a steam powered suction hopper dredge called "Kaptjain Nielsen", 1599 gross tons, capsized in the middle of Moreton Bay. Of the 24 crew on board, 9 lost their lives. The authorities were quickly into action however and were able to save 11 of the 16 men trapped inside the hull. This was a world record for the no. of lives saved from within a capsized hull. The boat was later raised and repaired and taken back to its home in Holland. Its wheelhouse and some other deck structures remained at the bottom of Moreton Bay .The site is surrounded by sandy ridges and lays in about 12 to 13 meters. Because of its isolation it attracts an awesome amount of Fish. Wobbegong sharks are here in plentiful loads, sometimes displaying aggressive behaviour

have dived the nelson for a few years. at times it has some huge parrot on it. buggered if anyne would get one up though. have seen schools of big snapper on the moreton side of the wreck on the drop off, they appear to be chasing the bait along the drop offs. (hint, hint)
    have fun

    Hi Craig,
no i haven't fished it, only dived it. there are/were some spectacular fish down there. there are some concrete blocks and steel to the west where the parrot seem to hold. they are like car tyres with tails. have seen people chasing school mac's around it. don't know how they went. have seen plenty of good snapper on the eastern ledge from the wreck. if i was to fish it i thinki would be looking for a bit of bait close by and fishing that.
    cheers

Re: Captain Nelson / Wreck near Mud Island

    Hi just a quick question.
Is the whole wreck down there or was it repaired leaving only the wheelhouse as in the quote that Heath posted? Dazza sounds like he would know after diving on it.

    thanks stevo. [smiley=huh2.gif] [smiley=huh2.gif]
