    Offshore Southport

Hi, i am planning on starting to fish the close reefs out from Southport, mainly the 12's, 18's and perhaps the 24's. I havent been out there in my rig but have got things sorted out finally with saftey gear, gps and sounder and really want to learn about these more accessible reefs.

I am guessing you try for live bait at Scotish Prince and than GPS marks and sounder to find reefs and fish. I would really appreciate some general pointers as to how to fish these areas, eg. drift or anchor, what species to target this time of the year, how ect ect..

    cheers

    Sheesh guys/gals ???

    Where do you start???

    Smellyfish, check you PM. [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

    Nictim,

I get a bit stand offish, about giving info when your Bio is contradictory.... sorry

In short, yes, get your livies around the scottish prince or the 12fathom reef. There are some good grounds right along the Goldcoast. All depends really on conditions weather I anchor or drift. Usually in winter I do a bit of both, but in summer its all at anchor due to the current.

Basically offshore you have 2 seasons. Summer & Winter.
Summer - Mackerel, Wahoo, Sailfish, Marlin, Cobia, Mahi Mahi, Tuna.
Winter - Snapper, Pealies, Trag, Jew, Tuna, Parrot, Amberjack, XXOS Cobia, Yellowtail King, Samsonfish.

    Nictim,
I think Heath is referring to the fact that you are signing off as Steve and your gender shown at the left hand side of your posts shows you as female.
I remember the lead singer of Fleetwood Mac was a female called Stevi Nicks but was not often referred to as Steve.
Jonny Cash wrote a song about a boy named Sue.
Maybe the boy named Sue had a sister called Steve, a dog called Moggie, a cat called Bubbles and fish called Rover.

    offshore gold coast is easy.
im new to it as well.
but here go's out through the seaway s/e agout 1 KM use sounder. bait usualy there all over the place, bait jig.
head east watch sounder straight out from seaway is the 24's you hit the 18's first if your worried get conture map for gold coast i have hema map point lookout to kingscliff
shows all the reefs you can workout GPS coordinates from that or just the distance use GPS for that. sounder will show rises in the bottom you want anything bigger than 4meters, ledges peaks. or wire weed. vertical strands on sounder starting on the bottom. if no run or little run 6.0 hook with 7-8 ball sitin on that squid or pilly or livey.
if run too hard bottom basher rig twin hook 1 up 1 down 1/2 pound lead on bottom . get some marks from books or dive sites. theres a book called 500 GPS marks for queensland. or theres a magazine called HOOKED in Paradice, lots of marks all generic but it will get you going.
    have fun
