Re: BILLFISH ESTIMATOR
if you can get a hold of the GFAA Australian Gamefishing Journal, they have the graphs for black, blues stripes and sails. If you cant get the 2003 one PM me your address and i will send one out too you.

Re: BILLFISH ESTIMATOR
I remember reading a septic gamefishing magazine a couple of years ago that had an article in it regarding weight estimates. It was saying that they have been checking on the standard 800 method (as described in the above link) and found quite a large discrepancy between the calculated weights, and actuals for various types of fish and also for different sexes and ages. Mostly underestimating the weight I think but sometimes over. They were of course most concerned about overestimating the weight so someone didn't think they had a record and killed the fish, only to find out later that it didn't even come close. It was way out on some occassions, with dividing by 600 or less giving the correct weight.
There were a couple of other methods proposed in the article that involved more measurements and more complex formulas. Can't for the life of me rememebr the name of the mag sorry. Surfing round the yankee websites might come up with something though.
If the GFAA graphs mentioned above are based on acutal results or tailored for each fish type, they will probably be more acurate than the 800 method.
Just thought I would mention what I had read since the results of checking on the formula seemed to be so far out that they were practically useless. Haven't ever gone gamefishing myself yet, so hopefully someone who has will reply and let you know what they use.
Cheers,
Jeff

This formula was also in the ANSA Qld record book a couple of years ago. We can use this table to work out points otherwise a T&R or C&R is worth 100 points under the ANSA system.

Thanks for that everyone - It seems my estimate was about right maybe a little underweight.

Re: BILLFISH ESTIMATOR
Heres a link that uses tables to estimate the various weights. Sounds like it is based on actual catch records. Might be interesting to compare to what you calculate with the 800 method, or any other know records (ie game fishing assoc. records etc).
There is also a link for calculating shark weights.
Hope it is of interest.
Cheers,
Jeff
