i can see so we have lost alot of gear and have noone to beat up for it.

wtf! That is one reason why I try to avoid letting people go into my stuff in fishing trips. Last year I spent $50 on braid scissors, and I only lost one pair myself /. You must be pretty pissed, cast nets aren't cheap especially when we keep going thru them so quickly , same with lures

The leader may have had a nick in it because it had been snagged a couple of times during the morning - sorry, I binned it and re-rigged. I didn't check as I was busy looking after the other needs of my guests like food, drink (non alcoholic) and bait.

When I shut off the drag something had to break and there were two of us hanging on to the rod!

Big Al (<>&lt has suggested I should have taken the drag off completely and the fish would have stopped pulling. Never considered this as I had so little time to react. I may have tried to chase it if it stopped for a little while and showed itself (it could have been an angry old shark) but when your not prepared, you make mistakes big time.

I know what you mean about gear going missing. Im not the neatest of fisherman but i dont lose my shit often, but the amount of lures which were smashed, lost torn or straightened by ron was unbelievable, kiel had most shit lost and broken.. Im lucky with scissors because ive found 2 pairs in perfect condition for braid so far this year.

yea mate like tim said wack a float on the anchor line EVERY time you anchor,the one time you dont do it is the time your gonna get spooled.I just use the same clip the spanner crabbers use,takes about 2 seconds to hook it on,see pic below.make sure the knot you tie your anchor off with is easy to undo so the deckie dosent stuff it up if your the one holding the rod .the other thing to be carefull of is cranking the drag up when a fish is peeling line,be aware that the more line the fish takes the more pressure is being put on him due to the resistance of the line being dragged through the water.if you want to see how much pressure this can add up to let a couple of hundred meteres of line out some time and drive the boat along at a fair pace,youll be surprised at the bend in your rod.
If you find yourself in that situation again i would wait until your getting low on the spool and bring the drag up slowly,if you still get to the bottom and there is no stopping it lock the reel and hope something breaks at the other end so you get your line back.
but still getting spooled buy some creature from the deep is a real buzz and when im old and stuffed i reccon ill still remember every time.

Nofrills, great advice. When I get my new deckie (where is that big, ugly neighbour of yours?) I'm sure hell set the boat up to catch trains on a regular basis.

The interesting thing to see would be getting a monster from the deep into my 5.3m Quinnie without killing the crew and sinking the boat! A 10kg Tuna causes enough problems - getting a 25kg+ Spanniard with TEETH would be an experience.

I watched first hand a guy attempt to stop a "train" off the jetty at Dunk Island a few weeks back. He was using a large hand reel with 200lb line (yes 200lb) He was braced against the side of the jetty and was close to getting pulled in.... it finally snapped the line.. so we never knew what it was... but small it wasnt.

Nofrills, if you would make Al leave the 2kg gear at home you wouldn't have to chase those bloody tuna all over the ocean

when I was living up at the cape many fishos would get beaten up by huge fish fishing off of the seisia wharf. no matter how heavy their gear was the fish was often the winner. occasionally we would get a glimpse of these things and usually they were huge cod/groper or sharks.

Hi All,
I'm with Nofrills,i used to chase trev's on 2kg with small 1000 spinning size reels.When 3-4kg trev's came along,start the engine up,throw the float over atatched to the anchor and chase the fish or get spooled !!!!.Then once the fish was in .Motor back to the float,tie back up and your back in the same position again.It worked a treat everytime.
