Trolling tweed 9 mile
I'm hopefully going out this weekend coming to the tweed 9 mile and have never fished there as yet, i'm damm keen to troll up a spainard from there, but incase i get bored with trolling where can i get slimies from on the way out? at Fidos? or should i just jig em up when i get there? i.e. is there plenty of bait out there?
Also any tips on trolling the 9 mile would be tops.
Thanks
JB

Re: Trolling tweed 9 mile
Mate I wish I could help you I have tried to get info on this myself but have had little luck, I have tried to jig for bait on the 9-mile b4 (admittedly only once) and all I caught was those litle grey fish that look like a square. I did notice a large school of slimies right against the rocky shoreline directly in from the 9-mile once though, hope you get some answers mate, good luck. Sean

Turn left out of the Tweed bar then left again - look for some reef - people may be floating on pointy objects near to your location.

I reckon the nine mile is not a good option for getting livies . You can sometimes find small tuna out there but most people used to go to the Kirra bait reef ( until the bloody sand bypass excess all but covered it up ) or to just off snapper for yakkas or slimeys . Slimeys are VERY difficult to find in close around here , most will be yakkas.
So make sure you have got lots of lures if trolling or bring dead baits to rig. Trolled it yesterday in ideal conditions for zip. No bait on sounder anywhere . Spoke to the spearos who said there is a cold water layer sitting on the bottom at present which explains it.
If you don't know the area - watch Fido's and the top of nine mile for cresting stand up waves if the swell is 1.5 plus.

Re: Trolling tweed 9 mile
Thanks for all your info, i appreciate the help. Looks like it will be a lure trolling option only, which i dont mind, would be dissapointed to troll out there all day and get nothing though.. I'm heading out sat either offshore southport or down there , still deciding where i can get the best chance to get a spainard??

Re: Trolling tweed 9 mile
Jb,
Have caught Spainiards on the Nine Mile before ( albeit 10 years ago ) but I always caught more at Palm Beach and Mermaid Reefs. Trolling Tailor and Bonito - You should be able to get these in close to shore around Burleigh and Palm Beach.
Trolled Live Slimies and Yakka's will also do the trick in these places but as the old addage goes big bait big fish. When down the Tweed we used to get our Livies - Slimies and Yakka's at Snapper Rocks but not sure what has happened with the sand bypass.
Not sure what the Tweed Bar is like these days but if you live closer to Southport then this may be a better option if you are not experienced with bar crossings.
Best thing to do is if you can Spin up/Troll up some small Tuna in these areas and put them out live you should be in Business - This produced plenty of Whaoo at the Nine mile for me as well as Spainiards in excess of 20Kg - But Whaoo mainly on the nine.
Also as JB said watch the Top of the 9 and Fido's with a big Swell - Boats have been capsized there - Keep your eyes open at all times
Hope this is of some help for you

Re: Trolling tweed 9 mile
Yeah JB
Best places for lives are the Kirra Bait reef (as snelly says hang a left once outside the bar and go around and down the corner, with a bit of luck you will see other boats there).
Or the sandpumping jetty its closer but can be inconsistant at times
Cheers Willo
