    YAMBA

I am planning a trip to Yamba at Easter and was wondering if anyone could give me a few tips on the best areas to fish and any GPS points for outside.

We were in Iluka May last year and had an absolutely awesome time fishing the beaches for flathead with plastics (Shark Bay). Also fished the river trolling lures for flathead and tailor. Fished Browns Rocks with livies for some really good sized Bream. Check out Dizzy's Bait and Tackle down that way - bloody good advice and service!!!!!!!
We chose Iluka over Yamba because even in peak holiday seasons, it's not crowded.

    Hi Hicksy,
Was nearly born in Iluka, thanks to my Old Mans fishing habit, which i thank him for, any way what sort of boat do you have, as there is some great spots of Woody Heads.
Pleanty of reefs, easy to get to and find. Also the river should be firing after this rain, have a on the spot fish o for live up dates if required.

Thanks for the tips, I have a 5.7mtr De Havilland half cabin with a 115 Mercury so I am pretty keen to get outside and give it a go when I get down there.

We were down there in June last year and were blessed with perfect weather. We were staying at Woody Heads and I beach launched from Woody while others were out through the bar. It was the first time I had fished this area and there are actually some GPS marks avaialable in one of the tourist brochures which worked for me. We caught snapper and jew on the shallow reefs at black rock which is about 12 km north of Woody with depths of 7-15m. We also got snapper and cobia on the Italian Grounds which were another 10 km or so NE from Black rock. I am told that at this time of year there should be good numbers of spotty mackerel there which average better size than those in SE Qld.

    Jeremy,

Is black rock just off the coast from Airforce beach and North a bit from Jeruselm Creek camp grounds? Seen a fellow come back to the Woddy camp ground a couple of years back (May) with some nice snapper which he said he got up that way. Someone told me there is a single pandanas or other tree that sticks up from the dunes that they use for a mark and that the spot isn't all that far offshore behind the break.

    Cheers,
    Jeff

    Hicksy,
You should be able to launch from Woody if you have a four wheeler, just watch the end of the ramp if you wheels are in the water, can turn to quick sand quickly. If you go straight out from woody heading north ( watch the rock in front and a bit toward shark bay it is under water and looks like weed but will take out your prop) take a line from the end of woody pt and the light house at Yamba, anywhere along that line you will find reef, same line towards flat rock. Another option is go around the front of woody to the southern end near moss hole, head seaward approx 1 km and sound around, have caught good snapper and pearlies in these spots with some very busy palagics and big cod. Watch out for the red rock cod, handle with care, nasty sting from spines. Would propbably see you down there at easter, but going west to fish for yellow belly and goodoo after the floods!!

    Anzac,
yep you need a fishing licence for all fishing in NSW, available most places, cost vary depending on lenght of licence. I think 3 days is $5 and about $25/year.

    Re: YAMBA

    Jeff,

I've only been there the one weekend, but the black rock area seemed quite extensive to me. For a long way north of Woody there is just sand - except just off the beach at Woody as previously mentioned - and then it turns into a fairly extensive patch of reef. Starts within a couple of km of the shore, and the shallowest part of the reef breaks even in a small swell. I don't know about any tree. Parts of the reef we saw and sounded were very rough and average depth was 10m, but I have been told the reef continues out a bit further than that too.

    Cheers,

    Jeremy

Thanks Jeremy, hopefully I'll be able to get down that way later this year and check it out myself. Great part of the world that.
