l have just started chasing off shore pelagics and am thinking of getting a trolling teaser l was wondering if anyone has some pics or recommendations on types or style ect
cheers spike
spike- rob will tell you his teaser works great but with his results of late who could argue? he just tows a string of about 5 large poppers with rattles in them! cheap and easy!
have a look at the design of the pakula "witchdoctor" or the "marlin magnet" these teasers are a sub surface teaser and look a million bucks in the water flashing from side to side! they are how ever pretty blody pricey for what they are.... a lump of wood with a little lead in the nose with some mirrors and paint slapped on.VERY CHEAP AND EASY TO MAKE! i think the witchdoctor is 45mmx95mmx550mm (from memory). you can also buy replacement mirrors from wellsy's tackle for both of teasers i mentioned. witchdoctor replacment mirrors-$45 and malin magnet replacment mirrors$22.
another popular teaser is the "bird" hendersons make one and once again it is very easy to make yourself! simply a chunck of timber cut to shape with a 3mm peice of alloy stuck on the stop to give the action. the "bird" shuffles along the surface... attatch a few squid skirts or CD's behind it to give a bit more splash and flash.
The witchdoctor has a huge following, and the results speak for themselves. Im convinced my homemade is as good as any for where I fish and even though it looks simple there has been plenty of adjustment and trial and error into getting it right, poppers aint poppers either what goes into mine wont be discussed here 8) just like im sure a blueprint for the witchdoctor wont be.
i use a very simple tearser system
all it is is 6 or so of those dimond shape flotes that have the flashers on the side with rattles in them! works a treat.
but then again anything used to flash and attract the fish is better than nothing
ok so sounds like teasers are worth while l like the sound of the poppers mainly because l have heaps of them made by my mate dizzy they are large and heavy of various colours
so how many how far apart and how far behind the boat , and how do l daisy chain the eg tying the front one is easy how do l do the second one on a dropper ? or to where the hooks would be on the front popper
just equal space between the poppers if that is what you go for to attach them just heavy jinki between them crimmped to the eye of the popper and as far back on the back of them to the next one how many you put on is up to you!
to set the teaser out it doesn't need to go out too far just to the back of the prop wash (where the prop wash sort of starts to disapper)
Spike, taking what you have and turning it into something that attracts fish to the lures, may or may not be possible...the vibrations it puts out may not be right for your lures and boat..get the idea?
Spike me boy. There must be a few young teasers hanging out around that local pub you hang out at.
Just invite a few along give each one a foam surf board, and let them hangout behind the cyclone.
Sure way to attrack a few
regards
Everyone who fishes for billfish seems to use them, does anyone bother useing them for mackeral, tuna etc. I guess, what situation would you use a teaser? I just have 3-4 of those pink skirts tied to a bit of string out the back, mainly because its there, so I guess it can't hurt, am I wasting my time?
Sean, if there was a teaser invented to repel tunas billfish trollers would line up to buy it, we get plenty of bycatch trolling so the teasers can only be a good thing imo, as long as it works on your boat
