Catching livies in the rivers When they are dirty?
Is it just as easy to get Herring when the water is as dirty as it is at the moment? If not What bait should I be trying to get for jewies? Any tips on where to find/how to catch bigger mullet, I think there is a fair few in the river at the mnoment. Thanks, Sean

Try to burly them(poddies)up with dry bread crumbs in the little boat harbour behind the cop shop,then fish for them with a fly hook under a float baited with fresh bread balls.There's a good hole about thirty yards out from the entrance that holds Jew,try your livie there or head around about halfway out the north wall where they are getting a few schoolies on lures at preseant(towards the top of the tide).

Was fishing up near Wardell bridge about this time last year. Water was dirty and no luck jigging herring around the bridge piers. My brother reckons they are nearly always there, so looks like the fresh had flushed them.
There were heaps of prawns around though and there were fish busting around on the surface at night. All we got were forktailed catfish though on some frozen prawns. Didn't have a net with me to scoop live ones. I threw a small slug around for a while and my brother had a go on fly, but could get a touch on whatever was breaking the surface. Guess whatever it was, was hitting prawns up near the surface.
So if there are prawns around, you might be better scooping a few of them for live bait, coz thats what the fish will be eating.
Will be interested to know if you find some mullet and manage to catch some. They gotta be around soon, coz they start up the coast at easter.
Fished over at Patch's Beach a few times (also about this time last year) pulled a few whiting and flathead out of some beach holes in the afternoons, but wished I had brought some gear with me to catch the mullet I could see hanging on the surface in the holes. They were getting smashed by something big occassionally, so I'm guessing jewies. This was afternoon and I think just on turn of low tide. Probably should have put a whiting on and gave it a swim. Bloody hind sight's 20/20 eh. I was having such a good session on the whiting, and was thinking about how to catch the mullet, and the thought didn't occur to me to put a whiting on a hook until after I had got home. DOH! > Not sure I had the bigger gear with me anyway.
Might be worth a look if the seas have settled and the beach has had time to get some features back on them.

Mullet never seem to mind the fresh water, we always have no trouble cast netting a few of those after rain. Herring too dont seem to be bothered that much by the fresh. I dare say the mullet are a good way to go for the jewies around the river mouths.

Spose ya just have to fish for mullet (pain) or jig for herring?
